OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

Vol. 45, No. 21 -- December 2, 2000

This Week's Program
The OPS City Singers

Last Week’s Program
-Allison Jarvis and Betsy Youngman
- Owensboro High School

We had two special guests who provided vital information on tax planning for individuals and businesses.  The tax information was presented by Mr. Chris Love and Ms. Theresa Elliot, both practicing tax managers from EKW & Associates.

The bulk of the program was dedicated to discussing tax situations such as capital losses, college savings plans, reasonable compensation, alternate minimum tax, and self-employment health insurance.  Each topic was both interesting and educational; however, a summary doesn’t allow the necessary space to explain the critical elements provided by Chris and Theresa.

If you desire additional information on any of the above topics, please contact Sim Davenport for a copy of the handouts provided by our guest speakers.

Thought for the Week:  Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has courage to lose sight of the shore.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS: ELECTIONS
Well, my November 8th message said the election would probably be over by the time you got the Impetus on Saturday, November 11th.  Who would have thought that as I write this column on November 29th, we are still in the process of electing a president!  Speaking of elections, this is a good time to review how we elect our Rotary president and directors.  Like almost everything we do in Rotary, elections have been handled many different ways.

Basically, the club elects the directors and the directors elect/appoint the officers.  Officers must be elected before the end of the year because Rotary International needs the names of the officers by December 31st in order to publish the national directory.  Our board of directors met on November 16th and elected the following 2001-2002 officers: Larry Mercer - President Elect; Jeff Ebelhar - Secretary;  and Bob Nation - Treasurer.  Of course, our president will be Marilyn Brookman, our current President Elect.

While directors do not have to be provided to RI by the end of the year, it is our current policy to elect them during the month of December.  We have 6 directors.  Directors serve staggered two-year terms with 3 rotating off the board each year.  The board nominates 6 members to fill the 3 vacant positions. On the election date announced to the club, members attending the club meeting vote for 3 of the 6 nominees.

This process was implemented last year and seemed to work well.  The board is always interested in your feedback and would welcome your comments as to how well you think the process works.  One very important request:  Please think about who you think would make a good director(s) and let any of the board members know.  We will be deciding upon director nominees at our December 14th meeting.

Thanks and have a great week!

Sim
