OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

December 1, 2001

This Week's Program...Gary Cox, President, Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities - Independent Higher Education in Kentucky.

Last Week’s Program...
Dr. Larry Vick, Superintendent of Owensboro Public Schools, shared what a delightful, supportive community he's found Owensboro to be since moving here in July. He spoke, too, of how far education has advanced in the last century--from children attending school when the farm
work was caught up to the space/information age. He stated that it was educated people who were responsible for this progress. Dr. Vick reported that the experts indicate there won't be as many changes made in the next century, but that the pace of the changes will be very
accelerated.

Some of the important changes that Dr. Vick noted happening in the Owensboro Public School System include: 14 members inducted into the Hall of Achievement, many teachers and administrators receiving numerous earned awards, the pupil expenditure cost being above average in national statistics, and above average teachers in the school system.

Dr. Vick is striving to see the following become reality: becoming a more efficient system, raising salaries regularly, placing the very best teachers in the classrooms, expanding the Hager PreSchool to an all day program, and most importantly, keeping the students first.

A big thank you to Dr. Vick for the fine job he is doing and for sharing his observations with Owensboro Rotary.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
If you were at Rotary this week, you noticed that we acknowledged national "Eat A Red Apple Day" which occurs on December 1, and each of us received a shiny red apple. Also on December 1st is "National Pie Day," and what could be more American than apples and pie = apple pie! An apple is something we all enjoy without thinking too much about it. Did you
know there are at least 20 different kinds of apples, including Red Delicious (which we had at Rotary), Jonathan, Golden Delicious, McIntosh, Ida Red, Rome, Gala, etc. Apples are used in every kind of food preparation imaginable including pies, cakes, salads, casseroles, sauces,
juices, and many other ways. Believe it or not, one apple contains no fat, no cholesterol, and no salt. An apple gives you more fiber than a serving of oatmeal. Apples can also be used in all kinds of crafts such as apple prints, apple jewelry, apple candleholders, apple collages, and apple dolls.
They can be used in apple birdfeeders, apple pictures, and apple window hangers. Why should we love apples? They won't make us fat! They look cool! They are way cheaper than caviar! They don't leave a slippery peel behind like bananas do! Apples have been grown since 300 BC--initially by the Greeks. European settlers brought apple seeds and trees to the New World, and apple trees were grown in New England as early as 1630. The favorite American apple story is about Johnny Appleseed, who in real life was John Chapman. Mr. Chapman distributed apple
seeds in the 1800s to settlers in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois and became a folk hero. What does all of this have to do with Rotary? Well, we want you to heed the ole saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away," and stay healthy and happy.

Have a great week!

Marilyn
