Last Week’s Program...
General Jerry D. Humble, Commanding General of the Marine Corps Recruiting
Command, was introduced by Glenn Higdon. General Humble is a graduate of
Western Kentucky University and was commissioned in
1969. As a Lieutenant he served in Vietnam and in Norfolk, VA. He was
promoted to Captain in 1974 and completed a tour with the British Royal
Marine Commandos where he was in charge of the K Company of 42
Commando. He also served with the 32nd Marine Amphibious Unit where he
established the Arctic Warfare Training Program. He was promoted to Major in
1980 and to Lieutenant Colonel in 1985. He commanded the
Battalion Landing Team 1/2, 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special
Operations Capable and the 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion. During
Operation Desert Shield/Storm, General Humble was the G-3, 1st Marine
Division and was promoted to Colonel in 1991. He reactivated the 31st Marine
Expeditionary Unit and became Director of the Marine Air Ground Task Force,
Staff Training Program Center, Quantico, VA, where
he was selected for Brigadier General. He commanded the Marine Corps Recruit
Depot/Eastern Recruiting Region, Parris Island, SC and then assumed command
of the 3rd Marine Division where he was selected for
promotion to Major General. He then served as the Commander, US Marine Corps
Forces Korea and Assistant Chief of Staff, C/J5, United Nations Command,
Combined Forces Command, US Forces Korea. His personal decorations include
the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two Gold Stars
and Combat "V”, Meritorious Service Medal with one Gold Star, Joint Service
Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation
Medal with one Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal and Combat Action Ribbon.
General Humble reported there are 172,500 Marines, of which 114,000 are in
operational forces, and 130,000 are outside of the USA on a daily basis in
114 countries. He said the Marines have been involved in addressing
terrorism since 1983, when Marines were attacked by terrorists in
Beirut. Almost 10 years ago, teams were developed to combat terrorism with
patrols to anticipate terroristic actions. He noted the Marines are 500
miles inland in Afghanistan at this time. General Humble said once a Marine
always a Marine--there were no "ex" Marines. He said the USA has the most
powerful and sophisticated military that has ever existed, and we should be
extremely proud of our military. He said the
service people are appreciative of the support of the American people. He
indicated that terrorism is a world-wide problem and is far from being over.
He concluded with saying the USA is the best country in the
world, and he is proud to be an American. General Humble received a standing
ovation.
We thank General Humble for being with Owensboro Rotarians and for a truly outstanding program. We also thank Glenn Higdon for arranging the program with General Humble

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
As we think about the new year in 2002 which will begin next Tuesday, many
of our thoughts are about what occurred in 2001 and what we hope will occur
in 2002. My thoughts for each Owensboro Rotarian are
expressed in the words of Grace Easley in her "New Year's Blessing":
May you love a long life,
Full of gladness and health,
With a pocket of gold
As the least of your wealth.
May the dreams you hold dearest
Be those which come true,
The kindness you spread
Keep returning to you.
May the friendships you make
Be those which endure,
And all of your gray clouds
Be small ones for sure.
And trusting in Him
To whom we all pray
May a song fill your heart
Every step of the way.
All good wishes to each and every one of you and yours for happiness, health, and hope in 2002. There is hope--and you are it!
Happy New Year!
Marilyn
