OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

July 28, 2001

This Week's Program...
Tracy Marksberry - Progress of the Neighborhood Advisory Board

Last Week’s Program...
Daviess County Jailer Harold Taylor told Owensboro Rotary members about the numerous programs offered at the Daviess County jail to assist the prison population. A few of these programs include: Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, GED, ministerial, classroom instruction, and community service opportunities. A Life Skills program will be implemented in the near future to train inmates on parenting skills, how to interview for jobs, and how to achieve better work ethics. Mr. Taylor presented interesting facts to explain how the jail relates to the community. For example, the average daily population of the Daviess County Jail is 421; 10,000 people are booked each year through the jail. Ninety percent of the prisoners incarcerated in our county are directly or indirectly related to drug or alcohol charges. Also, last year, inmates contributed 171,000 hours of community work which equated into $1,180,728. The new facility on Highway 60 East has 423 beds and should meet the needs of Daviess County for years to come. Because of this expansion there are no longer waiting lists to get into some of the programs offered by the jail.

Thanks to Mr. Taylor for a very enlightening program.

Thought for the Week: Worry is the darkroom in which “negatives” are developed!

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Have you ever had an experience that clutched your heart? You know the kind of experience that you might not have chosen to have gone through, if you had known how it would affect you. Afterwards, you realized that the experience would never let you look at things quite the same way again, and you also realized that you wouldn't change it for the world. You were actually grateful that you had the opportunity to grow and to be changed. Participating in Rotary Readifest has been such an experience. Rotary Readifest is a huge program to help children get ready for the beginning of school. All kinds of activities and display booths are provided for the children and parents, including dental and vision screenings, immunizations, school supplies, refreshments, door prizes, etc. Owensboro Rotary and Larry Hager have matched monies to pay for the Rotary Readifest along with the BellSouth Telephone Pioneers and the Districts' Family Resource/Youth Centers. This year, the event has been named Rotary Readifest, and Fred Reeves and Sim Davenport are chairing the two events with 56 Owensboro Rotarians working and/or providing door prizes (the names of our members who helped/will be helping are listed in the Impetus). Another experience of heightened emotional magnitude was the Shopping Trip for new school clothes, as sponsored by the Alma Randolph Foundation for area children. Funds are raised each year by a dinner, a concert, and contributions such as those from Owensboro Rotary. Without a doubt, participating in these activities provides some of the most gratifying experiences possible. The children are so cute, so hopeful, so thankful.........that anyone who was there had to be touched by the volume of children and the obvious volume of need. The students assisted at Readifest numbered approximately 2,650 for Owensboro Public Schools. Then 3,430 students for Daviess County Public Schools and 300 students for Owensboro Catholic Schools are anticipated for July 31. Alma and helpers assisted 550 children with new clothes at Walmart on July 24. Thank you, Owensboro Rotary members, for the job you are doing with these tremendously important projects. You are standing tall in the face of humanity and addressing the plight of children in our community who would not receive this kind of help without caring people like our members. These projects are wonderful examples of the very basis for service that Rotary was established and continues to represent.

Have a great week!

Marilyn
