A TRIBUTE TO RETIRING PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS
Since July 1st marks the beginning of a new Rotary year, special thanks
should be expressed to our retiring President Sim Davenport and retiring
Board Members Bob Burns and John Meister.
We have just completed a very successful year in Owensboro Rotary, and that success is due to the leadership of Sim Davenport. He spent countless hours working to make the meetings interesting and gave of his time on project after project. He listened to each Rotarian’s concerns and made every effort to address the concerns. He has been a dedicated and dynamic leader.
Thanks, too, to Bob Burns and John Meister, who served on the Rotary Board. Bob and John have been committed to strengthening Rotary and to attending the meetings of both the Board and Rotary. They have provided assistance and support at every opportunity.
We speak with the voice of all our members when we say THANK YOU to Sim, Bob, and John for caring, for being dedicated, and for being true professional Rotarians.
YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Remember in school when we studied government, the constitution, and the
thoughts and dreams of our greatest citizens as expressed in their writings?
Remember how we began to see our country as a land born
out of a sense of justice which continued to strive to be that shining light
of freedom as a beacon for the world? Remember when we began to gain that
larger perspective that we were part of a viable and
ever-changing society which had its problems but which recognized that fact
and worked for solutions? This was the beginning of our “civic
consciousness.” We began to know that if we were part of the problem, then
we needed to be a part of the solution. It was the knowledge that the
contribution of each one of us to society was important and could make a
difference.
Now suppose that everyone could discover this information. If everyone believed that what he or she did could make a difference in this community and strived to produce the best of which he or she was capable, what a community we would have! I believe this is possible. I believe that through Rotary we can show individuals their own worth and how their efforts can shape and improve. If we live our lives as responsible and caring Rotarians then we can help others in our society to make contributions as well.
How can we do this? In Owensboro Rotary there are a variety of committees in place to do all sorts of good things for the community, the nation, and the world. The committees are organized under each Rotary Board Member as follows: Bill Dexter - International Services; Sim Davenport - Big Project; Jeff Ebelhar - Community Service; David Edds, Jr. - Publications/Promotions; Darrell Higginbotham - Membership; Pat McFarling - Club Service; Larry Mercer - Vocational Service/Public Relations; Jane Noble - Special Events; Tom Smith - Service Projects.
Many members have already stepped up to accept the Chair positions of the committees, and they now are looking for members to help them. One of the main buzz words will that accompany what we do in Rotary this year is “participation.” We want everyone to participate in some committee and sign up by the end of July - for the committee of your choice. We may even list your committee on your Rotary badge. Sim Davenport has agreed to provide the committee names with the label maker he bought! There will be a large poster in the lobby each week which lists all of our committees and the Chairs. Please take a look at the poster and sign up for whatever committee you would like to join.
In addition, we want to have fun in our club, and “fun” will be our other buzz word! We are going to have table theme decorations once a month. We are going to have some door prizes occasionally. We are going to have some fun programs and special activities. And, we are looking for additional suggestions - do you have one? Let me know! With the wonderful members we have in our club, along with the wonderful board members and past presidents, we should be able to do just about whatever we set our minds to doing. Let’s work together in that pursuit as we “participate” and have “fun” for Rotary.
Thanks and have a great week!
