OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

June 16, 2001

This Week's Program...
President’s Annual Awards

Last Week’s Program...
Paul Haire, the first President of Owensboro’s new nonprofit group, PRIDE, advised Rotary members that PRIDE was founded to give the public opportunities to provide input on appearance issues in the city and county. It is concerned about the livability of our community. Paul said that while everyone has heard of “Build it and they will come,” that PRIDE takes a different approach: “Ask the community what they want, then build it and they will come.” Today, the group has over 200 members and Haire says he plans to double that during the next year.

The city’s plan to develop the riverfront was a perfect project for PRIDE. They have directed an intensive and all inclusive effort to gather input from the community as to what citizens would want our riverfront to look like. PRIDE has helped in conducting 14 focus groups, sent out surveys and hosted a workshop that was attended by 130 people. Over 300 students have participated in school projects designed to get their input. No age group or segment of our community has been left out.

PRIDE’s work will not end with the design of the riverfront The group will stay involved through the construction phase of the project. And, PRIDE will be involving its members and the public in any other public project that impacts the appearance and livability of Owensboro. Call 685-2652 if you want to join PRIDE.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS: YOU ARE IN CHARGE
Have you ever said during the year, “I wish I was running this place,” or, “I don’t know why they do things like that,” or, “I wish they would……..” Well, you are so lucky, because Marilyn Brookman is going to give you all the opportunity to “run this place.” To have your “hand on the throttle.” She has done a wonderful job developing a new organization chart that has many committees for those members who want to – dare I say it – get involved. And, yes, each of you will be urged to “join up.”

• Tired of “mystery meat” or stuffed peppers? Think your mama’s recipe is better than Darrell’s? Join the Meeting Meals committee.

• Want to have fun fining people who leave early or act up during meetings? Join the Sargent-at-Arms committee.

• Hate to give the prayer? Sign up your friend(s) to the Prayer/Pledge committee.

• Social life in the dumps? Can’t meet new people? Join the Fellowship committee.

• Want to write a weekly column for the Impetus? See your doctor.

• Like to take funny pictures? Join the Rotary Books/Picture committee and help Ken Lawson take pictures of members each week.

• Want to raise money for the Rotary Foundation? Yea, right, I thought so. No, really there is a lot we need to know about what the Foundation does because that is the group that funds all the international projects. Join this committee and help Guy.

• Like to party? Join the Monthly Celebration committee. Let’s liven this place up!

• Can’t get enough of the Internet? Want to show your creativity in developing Web pages? Know some good Web sites (not those kind!)? Join the Website committee.

• Think you can do a better job on the Gala? Come on, you know you do. Then how about joining the Gala committee?

• Like to dig through dusty records and see what members did when they were young? Hey, join the Archives committee.

• Your kid or grandchild didn’t get a scholarship? Join the Scholarship committee. I could go on and on. PR. Orientation. Membership. Youth Exchange. Group Study. No matter what you like, there is a committee for you. Make a resolution: I won’t be a member; I will be a participant.

Thanks and have a great week!
