YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS: ROTARY READIFEST
I know that most of you have heard about Readifest. And, unfortunately, I know that most of you don’t know as much as you should know about
Readifest. I sure didn’t before I got involved with the program this year. The 2001
Readifest will not be until July and our weekly program on May 16 will be on
Readifest. But because we have just concluded some important changes in the program, I wanted to discuss them with you
now. It definitely won’t hurt to hear some of this information several times.
First, and what I consider really big news, is that Readifest will now be known as Rotary Readifest. We asked for this change so that there would be
public recognition of our commitment to the program. Why did we want this recognition? Because we are a service organization and it is important that
the community know that we are supporting this vital program. And, it is important to you, our membership, because I know you want to take pride in
what we are doing and because we need prospective members to know that we do much more than just attend weekly meetings.
Another change is that our commitment to Rotary Readifest now consists of much more than an annual $20,000 donation. We are now committed to providing
volunteer hours. The initial planning meeting indicates we probably will need 25 – 30 members to work two hours each on July 23 and
July 31. Can we do it? You know we can! This is our major project. And, now, our name and reputation are on the line. Fred Reeves is
the Rotary Readifest chairman. Don’t wait for him to call you – volunteer now!
I cannot mention Readifest without mentioning Larry Hager. The reason we are able to make a $20,000 donation is because the Hager Foundation provides
$10,000 to match the $10,000 we raise from our charitable dues. But just as important, Larry continues to remind us that programs like Readifest are
what Rotary is all about. Service to others. And I can’t think of a better Rotary project than the Rotary Readifest.
Thanks and have a great week!
