Last Week’s Program...
Rev. Todd Love, Senior Pastor at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church,
brought the Thanksgiving message to Owensboro Rotary. Pastor Love shared how
Americans are good at words and how much the words are worth. He told how it
is said that every one of Rudyard Kipling's published words is worth $1. A
group of students wrote Mr. Kipling and enclosed $1 and asked him to please
send them one of his very best words. Mr. Kipling sent them one word.
THANKS. Pastor Love challenged Rotarians to mentally list all the people and
things we are thankful for this year. His list included: our country,
families, friends, people in public service, teachers, nurses/doctors,
public utility people, police, firefighters, truck drivers, water, clothing,
homes, medicine, church, and having one new day after another. Pastor Love
reminded everyone that thanks is one of our very best words and commitment
is one of our very best actions. We express our thanks and gratitude by our
commitments.
Special thanks to Todd Love for a timely and inspirational Thanksgiving message.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
November is Aviation Month, and that brings to mind just how far air travel
has progressed during the past 100 years. Wilbur Wright and Orville Wright
became actively interested in flying in 1895. In August 1899, they built a
two-wing kite of 5 feet span to test their idea of warping wings for lateral
control. In September 1900, they built a glider of 17 feet span, and tested
it at Kittyhawk, NC. In the summer of 1903, they built an airplane of 40
feet span, which incorporated all the aerodynamic knowledge they had
learned. On December 14, 1903, Wilbur attempted to fly the machine but
crashed. Three days later, the machine was repaired, and Orville flew it
successfully for the first time (Museum/History web site). Interestingly,
Orville Wright was a long time member of the Rotary Club in Dayton, Ohio,
according to the Rotary International web site.
As a result of the Wright Brothers' efforts, we have air travel available all over the world. In Owensboro, local scheduled air service and charter service are available at the Owensboro Daviess County Regional Airport. Passenger service, air freight, flight instruction, aircraft maintenance, hangars, and fuel are provided by full-service fixed-based operators. American Airlines has daily flights to St. Louis.
One of Owensboro Rotary members is Tim Bradshaw, Manager of our Airport. In commenting on Aviation Month, Tim said, "Aviation has become the mass transit of this new century. Highways are great for regional access, but runways connect us with the world. When you build a mile of asphalt, you can drive one mile. That same mile of asphalt in a runway for airplanes will take you anywhere in the world."
In comparing Rotary and Aviation, we could also observe how far Rotary has progressed since it was formed in 1905. Owensboro Rotary was founded in 1915, with 33 charter members. Rotary International and Owensboro Rotary, like Aviation, have continued to grow and mature into giant avenues of service for mankind. After all, "Mankind is our Business!"
Have a great week!
Marilyn
