Last Week’s Program...
Joe Ford entertained Owensboro Rotarians on Halloween by telling some true
stories and some ghost stories. Mr. Ford is no stranger to Owensboro or
Rotary. He has broadcasted weekly radio programs, written weekly and monthly
newspaper columns, published several books, helped establish the Owensboro
Area Museum in 1966 and retired as Director in 1987. He and his wife, Grace,
presently host a monthly topical television broadcast on Channel 51. He also
writes columns for the Messenger-Inquirer and the McLean County News. Joe
told stories about people being buried alive in the 1800's, and in
particular the story about little Max Hoffman, a five-year-old cholera
victim. After Max was pronounced dead and buried, his mother kept dreaming
he was alive. His mother insisted that the grave of Max be opened. Max was
indeed alive! He was revived and lived until he was 87 years old. Mr. Ford
declares that the oldest ghost story ever recorded is written in the Bible.
I Samuel tells of a witch that summoned Samuel from the grave. He encouraged
all to read it for themselves.
We thank Mr. Ford for not "tricking" us but "treating" us with his stories. We appreciate his making Halloween special for Owensboro Rotary.

Thought for the Week: Far away there in the sunshine, are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they may lead. - Louisa May Alcott
YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
"So when you ask, 'Can Rotarians do anything?' I answer: They can do
everything!"--Bill Moyers, Journalist, former press secretary to U.S.
President Lyndon B. Johnson, and Rotary Foundation Alumnus. Spoken many
years ago, these words truly capture the spirit of the Rotary Foundation's
mission which is: "To support the efforts of Rotary International in the
fulfillment of the Object of Rotary, Rotary's mission, and the achievement
of world understanding peace through local, national, and international
humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs." The Rotary Foundation
provides clubs the opportunity to participate in and contribute to programs
that make a real difference in the lives of people around the globe. It also
enables Rotarians to increase world understanding and peace through
meaningful cooperation with other clubs around the world.
Participation in Rotary Foundation activities can help attract and retain
members. November is Rotary Foundation Month, and it is a good time to
review the outstanding programs supported by Rotary
International through the Foundation. These include PolioPlus,
Health/Hunger/Humanity (3-H) Grants, New Opportunities Grants, Community
Assistance Grants, Discovery Grants, Grants for Volunteers, Disaster Relief
Grants, Humanitarian Transportation Grants, Peace Grants as well as
Ambassadorial Scholarships, Grants for University Teachers, Centers for
International Studies, Group Study Exchange Awards, and Foundation Alumni.
As we know, Loretta Williams, District Governor of #6710, has challenged us to save our quarters until we each have $100 to contribute to the Rotary Foundation. She gave our club 200+ film canisters for members to use to save quarters for the $100, although she said a check for $100 would work nicely. According to Loretta, "RI President Richard King has asked all Rotarians to achieve a per capita giving of at least $100 to the Rotary Foundation. If we do this, we can do twice the service to mankind that we do now. This is a very special year, because the contributions we bring in for the Rotary Foundation during the coming year will be the funds that will finance our projects and programs in 2004-5--Rotary's Centennial. Therefore, the amount that we raise will determine the scope of the projects that we will be able to offer around the world to bring to life the ideal of service through the Rotary Foundation." At this time, nine members of Owensboro Rotary have made their $100 contributions to Rotary International. They are: Jeff Ebelhar, Hugh Gilbert, Henry Payne, Don Pinkley, Ed Pulliam, Charles Ralph, Donna Risley, Frank Yarbrough, and Marilyn Brookman. Why not join with us and give your $100 to Rotary International as soon as possible?
Have a great week!
Marilyn
