Last Week’s Program...
Hugh Haydon, President and CEO of the Owensboro Chamber of Commerce spoke to
Rotary about a proposed program of study which addresses goals of numerous
organizations from those that are statewide to
local jurisdictions that are interested in fostering economic growth in line
with the goals and strategies of the New Economy. The program--an
interdisciplinary blend of six technical programs, (Information Technology,
Automated Manufacturing, CAD/CAM, Integrated Automation,
Electrical/Electronics, Electrical Maintenance) was developed after months
of meetings with various partners including regional business
leaders and economic development officials. The institute's program will
address four statewide economic goals: 1. Applied research in the state's
post-secondary institutions. Students will be responsible for using their
resources to offer solutions to the industry that, in turn, will apply the
solution in its workplace. 2. Business Innovation throughout the state.
Demonstrating each component of a fluid, integrated manufacturing system to
students will allow them to see how each act complements or impedes the
system's goals. 3. The attraction
of high-tech enterprises to Kentucky. The attraction of high-tech
enterprises to Kentucky is best accomplished by fostering an entrepreneurial
attitude that demonstrates to our homegrown talent that the state is a place
they can locate new high-tech companies. In addition, the curriculum at the
institute will be able to train an
existing workforce and supply a future workforce to any high-tech enterprise
interested in the community. 4. Advancement of high-order skills. The
advancement of high-order skills is a basic premise of the program.
Critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork are the curriculum.
Thanks to Mr. Haydon for the excellent presentation introducing an innovative combination of programs of study to Owensboro and Owensboro Rotary.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
This coming Monday our country will celebrate Labor Day. As we know, Labor
Day is a holiday that was established in order to honor the working people
of America. This is as it should be, because America has
been made great by the workers of our nation. From those who built the dams
that helped to supply us with needed power to those who spanned the country
with railroad tracks to those who established the businesses, schools, and
hospitals, all have played a part in contributing to the good of society;
all have helped to make
America great. Each day a host of Americans work at jobs to keep our country
going. From the farmer who grows the crops, to the manufacturer who turns
those crops into food products, to the truck drivers who
deliver them to the stores, to the clerks who sell them, America depends on
all sorts of workers to keep it moving. Every worker, every job that is
done, is one more note in a symphony--the song of America. It is good that
we set aside a day such as this to remember and honor the workers of our
nation, the men and women who keep us going and add to our country's
efficiency and greatness. It is also fitting and proper to remember
ourselves on this day, to remember that our work is very valuable in the
entire picture of a growing and vital America. Whether as a banker,
attorney, travel agent, educator, minister, physician, proprietor, news
media representative, insurance agent, dentist, accountant, legislator,
realtor, farmer, administrator, utility
provider, or law enforcement agent--we are involved in work that is very
valuable indeed. We are engaged in perpetuating the various components of
our society as well as ensuring the future of America. Whatever your
profession or vocation, your work is a most important part of the work
force. It is you who continues the day to day process in economics, health
care, comestibles, education, religion, jurisprudence, etc. It is also you
who will plan and shape the world that is to come tomorrow. The rest of this
picture is both important and
rewarding and that is helping our children and grandchildren to be ready to
step into that future. As they grow and mature, we have the responsibility
in seeing to it that they receive what they will need in order to assume
their places in the world they will inherit. We need to nurture them, help
them along their way, and support them in their work when that day
arrives--another job of ours that is vital to their success and to the
future of this land we all love so well. So to everyone, I say that this
Labor Day is truly our day. Let us take pride in that as well as in the
dignity of work that makes us the outstanding nation that we are. Happy
Labor Day!
Have a great holiday and a great week!
