Last Week’s Program....
Guest speaker this week was Paul Kuerzi, vice president and general manager of Ellis Park. Mr. Kuerzi, a Henderson Rotarian, joined Ellis Park in January 1999, shortly after Churchill Downs purchased the racetrack. Since that time, many updates have been made to the track, such as a redesigned grandstand, additional televisions, and refurbished barns.
Mr. Kuerzi explained various aspects involved in track betting, including the paramutual system and simulcasting. He also expressed upcoming concerns involving gambling competition in Indiana. In addition to Hoosier Park in Anderson, a new racetrack is opening soon in Columbus (Indianapolis Downs). This track will compete with Ellis Park by having an off-track betting parlor available in downtown Evansville. There is also an additional challenge coming from the new convenience of dockside gaming at Casino Aztar. To contend with this competition Ellis Park plans to make facility upgrades, improve simulcasting capabilities, and begin advertising a player retention program.
We thank Mr. Kuerzi for speaking to Owensboro Rotary about Ellis Park.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Studies show that animals that play more, are more likely to survive and have better adapting skills. It’s the same with humans - recess in elementary school was always important. At the time, we didn’t know why we had recess; we just enjoyed it! So on the lighter side of life, enjoy a little laughter…..
The average suth’ner knows:
…the difference between a hissie fit and a conniption fit.
…pretty much how many fish make a mess.
…what general direction cattywumpus is.
…that "gimme sugar" don’t mean pass the sugar.
…when somebody’s "fixin" to do somethin’, it won’t be long.
…how good a cold grape Nehi and cheese crackers are at a country store.
…what "Well, I Suwannee!" really means.
…a good dawg is worth its weight in gold.
…real gravy don’t come from no store.
…when "by and by" is.
…how to handle their "pot licker".
…the difference between "pert’ near" and "a right fer piece".
…never to go snipe huntin’ twice.
…at one point learned what happens when you swallow tobacco juice.
…you should never loan your tools, pick-up, or gun to Nobody.
…rocking chairs and swangs with an old person in them are history lessons, and you should listen well.
Have great week,
Larry
