OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

December 7, 2002

This Week’s Program... Dr. Phil Hurley - Joint Camp

Last Week’s Program...
Debby Neel with the Owensboro Mercy Health System HealthPark spoke to the club concerning the health of area residents. She reported that the U.S. is facing a health crisis as the number of overweight and obese Americans increases. Statistics indicate that approximately 60% of the residents of the Green River Area Development District are considered overweight and that the condition is becoming more prevalent among children. Physical inactivity and poor eating habits are major contributing factors.

Ms. Neel also informed the club of the many local initiatives aimed at improving the health of our community. These include a good parks system; several community action groups that focus on health issues; OMHS’s partnership with the public schools to provide fitness centers and school nurses; and the McAuley Clinic, which provides health care to the indigent. She reported that a Lifestyle Summit is planned for May 31, 2003 to set community-wide goals and develop the action plans to achieve them.

Ms. Neel reviewed "The Four Pillars of Support for a Healthy Lifestyle." These are 1) increase physical activity, 2) eat a nutritious diet, 3) get preventive screenings, and 4) make healthy choices, avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking and drug use. By adhering to these guidelines and encouraging others to do the same, we can help Owensboro attain the goal of becoming the healthiest community in Kentucky.

We thank Debby for speaking to our club and sharing such important information with us.

Thought for the Week: Dream as though you’ll live forever. Live as if you’ll die today.  - James Dean

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
As we are in the middle of the holiday season, it doesn’t take us long to realize that family is most important. But as kids are out of school and grandkids are visiting, we all may need more patience during this time of year. Here is some humor to help you cope with children…

•  You spend the first two years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next sixteen telling them to sit down and be quiet.
•  Grandchildren are God’s reward for not killing your own children!
•  Mothers of teens now know why some animals eat their young!
•  Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn’t have said.
•  The main purpose of holding children’s parties is to remind you that there are children more awful than your own.
•  We child proofed our home, but they are still getting in!
•  Be nice to your kids. They will choose your nursing home.
•  If you have a lot of tension and you get a headache, do what it says on the aspirin bottle: "Take two aspirin" and "Keep away from children."

Have a great week,

Larry
