This Week's Program...
Father Leonard Alvey, Islamic Philosophy (commemorating Rotary World Understanding Month)

Last Week’s Program...
Mr. Ed. Mastrean, Director of Community Relations, KET, spoke to Owensboro Rotary about the history of KET and the new programs recently produced. KET now has 16 transmitters, covers approximately 99% of Kentucky, and produces 300 hours of original programming. One third of the programs aired are for children. Approximately 640,000 Kentuckians watch KET every week. TeleFund 2002 is a major on-air fund-raiser that is part of a nationwide effort to ask public TV viewers to become financial supporters of their stations. Highlights during the March 2-19 membership effort include: Basketball in Kentucky--Great Balls of Fire, a four hour overview of the phenomenon, airing Tuesday and Wednesday, Mar. 5 and 6 at 8/7 p.m. CT; a special two hour edition of Kentucky Life entitled "Simple Pleasures, Hidden Treasures", airing Saturday, Mar. 2 at 8/7 p.m. CT; Louisville: 30 Years of Change, a historical documentary, airing Monday, Mar. 11 at 8/7 p.m. CT; and bluegrass music specials, including Down from the Mountain, airing Thursday, Mar. 7 at 8/7 p.m. CT and the best of Jubilee, airing Wednesday, Mar. 13 at 8/7 p.m. CT. Videos featuring basketball in Kentucky generally and Owensboro specifically were shown as a part of Ed Mastrean's program. Kentucky Wesleyan College's outstanding basketball teams and coaches over the years were featured.

Our thanks to Ed Mastrean for an interesting oral and video presentation.

Thought for the Week: The differences between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
The names of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Martin Luther King are a part of the history of our nation. They are instantly recognizable not only in America but in countries in other parts of the world. They represent the best in honor and devotion to the cause of democracy. What is sometimes difficult for us to imagine when we think of them is that they were real people who once walked this land. People who ate and slept and suffered and laughed like every other human being. No doubt George Washington and Abraham Lincoln would have been Rotarians if Rotary had been in existence, and Martin Luther King would have been in different circumstances. Because of their greatness and what they achieved and the years that have passed, they have acquired the status of legend. Stories abound about them, some of which are true and many of which are myth. What were they like, these men who achieved so much? Two came from well-to-do families, while one was born into a poor family. Two were formally educated, while the other one largely taught himself. One inherited lands and was a successful farmer, one worked at many jobs including manual labor, and one was a minister and the son and grandson of clergy. They were alike in many ways, and the foremost similarity they shared was a love of freedom and a willingness to work and to devote themselves to ensuring that freedom flourished for all. George Washington helped to forge a new nation that was dedicated to liberty. Abraham Lincoln saw a nation about to be divided by hate and helped to build a single nation dedicated to the ideal of equality for all. Martin Luther King chose to fight prejudice with love and justice unhindered by race or creed. They knew in their hearts that what they were working for, what they were sacrificing for, what they were suffering for was a concept much bigger than themselves. They were working for a concept called America. They did not do this alone. Rather, they supplied the leadership, the drive, and the direction that people devoted to truth and honor could follow in the greatest of all endeavors--the building of a land where people of all nationalities and beliefs could work and live and worship and raise their children in that most cherished of all states--in freedom and in liberty. They really embraced the goals and objectives of Rotary, didn't they?! For their leadership, for their devotion, for their struggle and triumph, we honor their names this month on President's Day and during Black History Month. As we honor them, let us resolve that their efforts will never be wasted on us, and that we will cherish and defend the liberty of America--that we will practice it in our day-to-day lives in our dealings with all mankind.

Have a great week!

Marilyn
