OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

February 2, 2002

This Week's Program... Chuck Howell, Corporate Express

Last Week’s Program...
Owensboro Rotary was pleased to hear Randy Moore, broadcast journalist, from Fox 7 News present a "State of the Media Address." The focus of Mr. Moore's address was how the media has changed since September 11. Prior to September 11, the news was dominated by what he termed the sensational, sexy, and superficial.... O.J. Simpson, Monica Lewinsky, and Gary Condit as examples. After September 11, he believes Americans want to reconnect with "home" and said that he thought Journalism is trying to do just that--return to its roots. The public is saying that they want the media to get serious. Modern media is now facing challenges that they haven't in the past. Wars are televised now whereas they never were before, funerals of casualties are being televised, integrity polls of journalists are low, many cable channels are available to the public now and viewers have the power to access their own information, and the Internet is providing the news to viewers before journalists can broadcast it. There are strengths of television, however, such as: immediacy, the ability to portray human drama, visuals, and relevancy. Randy Moore has been broadcasting for Channel 7 since 1980. He has experienced some of these media changes and is facing new challenges. Randy encouraged Rotarians to watch a new program segment on Fox 7 entitled, "Unlimited Access". Also, beginning on March 1 a two hour morning show will be produced and a half hour noon show.

We thank Randy Moore for his years of service in broadcasting and the outstanding job he does in keeping us informed about our communities, our country, and the world

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
January is Rotary Awareness Month, and I thought it would be fun to look at a country that was founded in January. Australia is such a country and is home to approximately 1,190 Rotary Clubs and over 36,500 Rotarians. On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillips and the First Fleet arrived at Sydney, Australia, and formed the first permanent European settlement on the continent. The European settlers were introduced to many of the native animals of Australia such as the kangaroo, koala, bilby, platypus, dingo, and crocodile.

Many Australians celebrate the anniversary on January 26 by giving awards, watching fireworks, and holding barbeques with friends and family. Awards given on Australia Day as a part of the festivities include Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, and Young Achievers. Famous Australians include: Nancy Bird, John Flynn, Truganini, Edith Cowan, and Evonne Goolagong Cawley. Laughing Gear (mouth), Dial (face), Happy as Larry (fortunate or lucky), Silly Season (summer holiday between December and Australia Day), Score a Bait (receive an invitation), and Chew the Fat (talk) are examples of popular Australian lingo. No Worries Mate and G-day Mate are popular greetings in Australia. According to the Encyclopedia Americana, the official name of the country is the Commonwealth of Australia, and it is a national federation of six states and two federal territories. Australia is geographically isolated from other continents by oceans and seas. The country is about the size of the United States exclusive of Alaska. It is the leading sheep producing country in the world. Population is over 13,000,000, and the national language is English. We salute Australia and our fellow Rotarians during Rotary Awareness Month! We like Australia so much that we will even send our Club President to Brisbane, Australia, in 2003 for the international convention!

Have a great week!

Marilyn
