OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

February 23, 2002

This Week's Program...
Dr. Lawrence Gering, Cardiac Electrophysiologist (commemorating Heart Month)

Last Week’s Program...
Guest speaker, Father Leonard Alvey, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Counselor at Brescia University, began teaching World Religions in 1976. That same year he left on an organized trip to the far eastern countries. He learned from that trip and other trips that have since comprised his world wide travels that America truly is a world leader, and that we need to think American as well as to think Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc., if we want to understand and to be understood by other countries and nations. He has discovered that although countries have diverse cultures and languages, there is a universal thread that all have in common. That common ground is peace.

Father Alvey used a dollar bill as an example and explained the two seals found on the back of the dollar bill. One of the seals displays an eagle. In one claw of the eagle is a group of arrows, in the other claw, an olive branch. The arrows, of course, represent war and the olive branch, peace. Father Alvey stressed that nations that want justice must strive for peace. He questioned if there is any real justice in war. He reminded Rotarians that all world religions are interested in peace, and that peace must become the primary thought process of our world leaders, especially in the critical time that we now find ourselves.

We want to thank Father Alvey for his very inspirational presentation and for sharing about his world travels and the wisdom he gained from them.

Thought for the Week: Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen!

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Did you know that February is both Dental Health Month and Healthy Heart Month? As we salute and thank our Dentists and Physicians and all who work with them to keep us healthy, I thought we might want to review some information about our teeth and our hearts. Did you know: children have 20 teeth and adults have 32 teeth; enamel is the outer covering of teeth and is the hardest substance in the body (even harder than bone!); chewing sticks like toothpicks were used by the Babylonians as early as 3500 BC; and early toothpaste ingredients included cinnamon, strawberries, and burned bread! For healthy teeth, we need to avoid too many sugars and sweets. Sugars and acids in some foods dissolve calcium and help create plaque--that clear bacterial film that combines with sugars to form acids that eat through tooth enamel, causing tooth decay and gum disease. What can we do for healthy teeth? According to Dr. David Young, one of our members, we should, "Brush daily reaching all surfaces of each tooth, floss daily, avoid too many sweets, watch snacks and hard candy, and see our Dentist twice a year."

Did you know: in our lifetime, our hearts could beat over 3 billion times; it takes less than a minute for a drop of blood to travel through the body and back to the heart; and that the heart beats continuously 75 to 85 times a minute every minute of a person's life. For a healthy heart, we need to avoid eating lots of high fat, high cholesterol foods which cause waxy deposits in the arteries. These deposits slow down blood and make the heart work harder, wearing out the heart and increasing the risk of heart disease. What can we do for a healthy heart? According to Dr. Frank Yarbrough, one of our members, we should, "Eat heart-healthy foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-protein items such as chicken, fish, beans, and low-fat dairy products, don't smoke, exercise every day, and see our Doctors on a regular basis."

Let's stay healthy (the world needs good Rotarians!) by observing these suggestions and produce miles of smiles and billions of complete beats! Thanks David and Frank for your comments.

Have a great week!

Marilyn
