Last Week’s Program...
Owensboro Rotary welcomed Mr. Chuck Howell,
President-CEO of Corporate Airlines. Mr. Howell is
responsible for the overall direction and operations
of the company. Corporate Airlines employs 220, flying
as AmericanConnection, a code-share partner of
American Airlines out of St. Louis, MO, and presently
serves ten cities. Corporate Airlines originated in
Nashville, TN, relocated to Raleigh, NC, and in 2000
was approached by TWA about flying five cities out of
St. Louis. When TWA filed bankruptcy, American
Airlines
took over TWA interests and effective Dec. 2 started
flying AmericanConnection. Mr. Howell spoke about
how aviation has changed since Sept. 11 and how these
changes have effected AmericanConnection. The St.
Louis hub has remained intact and services three
flights per day from Owensboro. Screening passengers
is a much simpler process on these connecting flights
versus the screening process in the larger airports.
He
reminded Rotarians that flying out of local airports
is much more convenient now than before Sept. 11.
Parking, screening, and not having to be checked in
two hours before flight time are only three of many
factors that contribute to this convenience. Although
costs of training more personnel and escalating
insurance prices are small hindrances, there has never
been a safer time to fly in the history of aviation.
Mr. Howell praised Owensboro for the very nice
facility at our local airport and encouraged Rotarians
to take advantage of it.
Our thanks to Chuck Howell for working with our city to make travel arrangements convenient for us.

Thought for the Week: Teamwork....remember, if you try to go it alone, then the fence that shuts others out shuts you in!
YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Next week will include the celebration of St.
Valentine's Day on the 14th. It will also be Rotary
Family Week as well as part of International
Friendship Month. What a nice combination: love,
family, and friends. St. Valentine's Day is a day to
show all of the special people in our lives how much
we care about them. The first Valentine was sent in
the third century by a young priest named Valentinus.
He was executed on February 14 for befriending and
helping Christians. Thus, the name of
Valentinus--Valentine has come down through the
centuries as the word which stands for affection among
family, friends, and lovers. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.,
said, "Love, expressed by thoughtfulness and
consideration, is a golden thread which ties together
the hearts of friends as well as those of husband and
wife, child and parent. Little acts of thoughtfulness
mean more than costly gifts. Consideration for the
feeling of others shows an 'others-centered' love.
Love goes 'make the world go round,' as it is
necessary to life. Yet love is difficult to define.
Solomon wrote about it in his Proverbs. Paul in his
letter to the Corinthians in the New Testament writes
how great is the influence of love in life. A little
girl once asked her troubled Daddy what she could do
to help him. He replied by asking what a little girl
like her could do. Her answer was, 'I can love you.'
It was the perfect answer as love is the greatest
solver of human problems." Then, to end on a light
note, here are some Valentine-related jokes from J. R.
Miller (not the Owensboro J. R. Miller): "There were
over 200 girls in my graduating class, and I never
kissed one of them." "Which one was that?" "Doctor,
even though you've diagnosed me as having a split
personality,
is it all right for me to get married?" "Oh sure. Who
are you planning to marry?" "The Johnson twins." "I
understand you want to become my son-in-law." "No,
sir, I certainly don't. But I want to marry your
daughter, and I can't think of any way out of it."
Have a great week!
Marilyn
