OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

June 8, 2002

This Week's Program... No meeting due to Gala on June 13

Last Week’s Program...
Cap Gardner Day 2002 will long be remembered. Cap celebrated and was "roasted" for his 60 years of Rotary membership and service. Candance Brake, John Carpenter, Jack Darnell, Sim Davenport, Hugh Gilbert, Esther Jansing, Kirk Kirkpatrick, Donna Risley, Gary Sisk, Frank Wagner, and Martel Wightman did the roasting honors in a program coordinated by Glenn Higdon

Many things were learned about Cap Gardner that were not known before. Not many knew that Cap is aware of every party that goes on in Owensboro because of his affiliation with the State Alcohol Commission, that Cap played a little too much football in his day without a helmet, that his nickname in the Navy was "Precious", that he experienced a fake impeachment as Rotary President, that his social security number is 3, that he never made up Rotary meetings in World War II, that Cap joined Rotary when it was Yellowbanks Rotary, that he has dozed off in Rotary longer than some members are old, and that Paul Harris personally presented Cap the Paul Harris Fellow Award.

Many things were brought to the attention of Owensboro Rotarians that were already known such as: Cap Gardner has a remarkable career, a history of public service, and a love for his community. He is a gentleman as well as a mentor. He is compassionate, dedicated, accomplished, courageous, gracious, generous, a respected leader, and a good sport. Cap, thanks for letting your Rotary friends have fun in a program to really honor you. Thanks for being such a wonderful example in so many ways to all of us. You truly are "a jolly good fellow".

Thought for the Week: "You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor." - James Allen

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
No doubt about it, baseball is one of America’s favorite and best loved sports. Baseball was founded in June, 1839, and has grown at an unbelievable pace for the past 163 years. Rotarians in America as well as in other countries share that love of baseball and have built a baseball complex for children with disabilities in Atlanta, offer baseball camps in Germany, Italy, Nicaragua, Sweden, and many other activities and events.

Owensboro Rotary has its own celebrity member who has played professional baseball and he is Bruce Brubaker. Bruce signed with the Milwaukee Braves right out of Camp Hill High School, PA, and as a 17-year-old received a $35,000 bonus and was assigned to the Braves Rookie D League Team in McCook, NE. The next year, he played ball for Wellsville, NY, in the New York-Penn League. Three years later, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers and played for Syracuse in the AAA International League. Bruce then wound up pitching for the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Milwaukee Brewers before suffering career-ending shoulder problems. He played professional baseball for 13 years across 3 decades. Bruce retired from the Brewers AAA Club and started his second career in automobiles in Boonville, IN. He then went to Lexington and eventually came to Owensboro when he bought Harry Holder’s dealership.

During his professional baseball career, Bruce had a natural ability and could throw a ball at 97 miles per hour. He played with the greatest managers including Tommy Lasorda, Gene Mauch, Dave Bristol, and Walter Alston. Hall of Famer Ted Williams once walked into his dugout and shook his hand.

Owensboro Rotary salutes the people in baseball generally and Bruce Brubaker specifically for contributing to the enjoyment of Americans and the people of other countries for such a great sport. Take me out to the ballgame...................

Have a great week!

Marilyn
