OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

March 30, 2002

This Week's Program... Dean Ehrenheim - YMCA

Last Week’s Program...
Mr. Dean Stanley, Chairman of the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, along with Mrs. Mary Bryan Hood, the founding Director of the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art and President of the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art Foundation, shared an excellent video presentation with Owensboro Rotary that portrayed the growth and development of the museum. The presentation showed what a great asset this cultural institution is to our region. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary season, the museum has been enlarged to expand the present facility with an additional 20,000 square feet for arts and exhibition wings, an atrium sculpture court, and gift shoppe. American, European, and Asian highlights are among the treasures of internationally important works. Unique to the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art is The Stained Glass Gallery, a permanent installation of sixteen turn-of-the-century stained glass windows in 25 foot light towers. The museum has also developed a comprehensive survey of Kentucky art from the early 1800's to the present. Complementing the exhibitions each season are lectures by nationally known authorities, fine art films, videos, performing arts events, and studio art classes and workshops by artists of national and regional prominence. More than 300,000 children and adults annually take advantage of these activities and more than 70,000 people visit the museum each year.

Our thanks to Dean Stanley and Mary Bryan Hood for an interesting program. Owensboro Rotary extends best wishes for a very successful 25th Anniversary celebration of the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art.

Thought for the Week: "It’s the constant and determined effort that breaks down all resistance and sweeps away all obstacles." - Claude M. Bristol

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
The month of March is considered many things and among them, Optimism Month. In Og Mandino's book, A Better Way to Live, he outlined 17 rules to live by, which just seemed to be written for Owensboro Rotarians for Optimism Month! SOME of the rules are as follows: (1) Count your blessings. Once you realize how valuable you are and how much you have going for you, the smiles will return, the sun will break out, the music will play, and you will finally be able to move forward toward the life that God intended for you. (2) Whenever you make a mistake or get knocked down by life, don¹t look back at it too long. Mistakes are life's way of teaching you. No one wins them all, and your failures, when they happen, are just part of your growth. (3) Let your actions always speak for you, but be forever on guard against the terrible traps of false pride and conceit that can halt your progress. The next time you are tempted to boast, just place your fist in a pail of water, and when you remove it, the hole remaining will give you a correct measure of your importance. (4) Each day is a special gift from God, and while life may not always be fair, you must never allow the pains, hurdles, and handicaps of the moment to poison your attitude and plans for yourself and your future. (5) Beginning today, treat everyone you meet, friend, foe, loved one, or stranger, as if they were going to be dead at midnight. Extend to each person all of the care and kindness and understanding that you can muster, and do it with no thought of any reward. (6) Laugh at yourself and life. Never take yourself too seriously. (7) Never neglect the little things. Never skimp on that extra effort, that additional few minutes, that soft word of praise or thanks. (8) Welcome every morning with a smile. Let your first hour set the theme of success and positive action that is certain to echo through your entire day. (9) You will achieve your grand dream a day at a time, so set goals for each day. (10) Never allow anyone to rain on your parade and cast a pall of gloom and defeat on the entire day. Remember that no talent, no brains, no character are required to set up in the fault finding business. (11) Search for the seed of good in every adversity. (12) Realize that true happiness lies within you. (13) Attend every Rotary meeting! (Just kidding on this one.)

Have a great week!

Marilyn
