Thought for the Week: "The place to improve the world is first in one’s own heart and head and hands." - Robert M. Pirsig

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Sunday, May 12, will be the ninety-second annual observance of Mother's Day in our country. According to Holly Hildebrand, in her article in the Houston Chronicle Interactive, Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia is credited with bringing about the official observance of Mother’s Day. Her campaign to establish such a holiday began as a remembrance of her own mother, who had died in 1905 and who had tried to establish "Mother’s Friendship Days" as a way to heal the scars of the Civil War. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize Mother’s Day. A year later, nearly every state officially marked the day. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother's Day as a national holiday to be held on the second Sunday of May. When she died in 1948, at age 84, Jarvis had become a woman of great ironies. Never a mother herself, her maternal fortune dissipated by her efforts to stop commercialization of the holiday she had founded, Jarvis told a reporter before her death that she was sorry she had ever started Mother’s Day. She spoke these words in a nursing home where every Mother’s Day her room had been filled with cards from all over the world. Today, because of and despite Jarvis’ efforts, many celebrations of Mother’s Day are held throughout the world Although they do not all fall at the same time, such countries as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium also celebrate Mother’s Day on the same day as the United States. Of course, Rotary International helps mothers all over the world every day, especially those who are struggling with poverty and/or ill children. Most of us find Mother’s Day to be a great opportunity to honor our Mothers and to thank them for the many sacrifices they made on our behalf. All kinds of acknowledgments are done from gifts, flowers, poems, cards, telephone cards, e-mails, family gatherings, etc. In my case, I thank my mother, Lularose Armstrong, on a regular basis for all she has done for me and continues to do for me. Owensboro Rotary lauds the Mothers of all of our Rotarians and salutes our members who are Mothers on this special day.

Have a great week!

Marilyn
