YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
On May 10-11, the International Bar-B-Q Festival will be held in downtown Owensboro, commemorating National Barbeque Month. This event attracts approximately 80,000 people including lots of Rotarians to Owensboro to enjoy the food, cooking contests, and entertainment. According to Michelle Wright, one of the co-chairs of the event, David Adkisson and Kenny Bosley are credited with beginning the Bar-B-Q Festival 24 years ago. It started as a Chamber of Commerce event and was funded by the City of Owensboro, Daviess County, the Tourist Commission, and the Chamber. Since that time, the festival has grown beyond the wildest dreams of the founders and now includes most businesses, agencies, organizations, schools, colleges, and universities in the area. There is also a website for information about the festival: www.bbqfest.com.  No doubt about it, Owensboro, Kentucky, is the Barbeque Capital of the World!

Barbeque is the name for a variety of foods that are prepared not only locally but from coast to coast in our country as well as in many other countries. Basically, barbeque is the manner in which meat of all kinds is prepared--beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey, raccoon, goat, etc. A sauce ranging from mild to extremely hot is used that includes catsup, brown sugar, vegetable oil, red (and sometimes green) peppers, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, lemon juice, chili powder, and a variety of other ingredients chosen by the chef.

There are many books written on the subject of barbeque such as Revenge of the Barbeque Queens, Barbeque: 200 Recipes for Outdoor Eating, Al Roker's Big Bad Book of Barbeque, Baptists at Our Barbeque, Bar-B-Que, Barbecue, Barbeque, Bar-B-Q, B-B-Q, etc. If you are a barbeque novice, there are lots of books to help you participate in the spicy world of barbeque!

We are also fortunate to have some famous restaurants in this area that serve delicious barbeque. Any time that we want to eat barbeque, we have a great choice of restaurants. Most also provide carryout service for those busy times and catering for those important events.

If you go to the International Bar-B-Q Festival in Owensboro on May 10 and 11, I'm sure you will see a number of Owensboro Rotarians who are working in different ways to ensure the success of the Festival. Also, there will be many Owensboro Rotarians there enjoying the food and camaraderie.

Have a great week!

Marilyn
