OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

November 16, 2002

This Week’s Program...Wayne Hart - Meteorologist

Last Week’s Program...
Beverly Blaney, a representative for Taylor Tours, spoke to Rotary on trends in the travel industry and tourism opportunities for Owensboro. The travel industry has obviously changed after the tragedy of September 11, 2001. More people are hesitant to fly to destinations; therefore motor coach travel has been a fast growing type of transportation for the industry. It is affordable and convenient, and offers a good opportunity to meet new people.

Ms. Blaney suggested ways to promote tourism in Owensboro. Bus tours can be developed that include Owensboro in a series of other stops, or the city can be the main destination during special events. Activities like the Barbeque Festival, Friday-After-Five, concerts at the Riverpark or Executive Inn, and area museums can be included in tours to this area.

Special thanks to Alma Randolph for sharing her talent in a tribute to our veterans.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
This week we welcomed Gavin Roberts as a new Rotary member. Gavin grew up in Owensboro, and graduated from Daviess County High School, Owensboro Community College, and Western Kentucky University. After a brief move to Dallas, Texas, he moved back home to work for Miles Enterprises. In 2001, he became self-employed and is now an agent for Kentucky Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company.

Gavin is an active member of First Christian Church, serving as vice chairman for outreach and a member of the general board. His community involvement includes the Help Office board, Chamber of Commerce, Contact Club, Chamber of Young Professionals, and the Farm City Breakfast Board. Please get to know Gavin and welcome him into Rotary.

Have a great week,

Larry
