Last Week’s Program...
Rotary was pleased to welcome Captain
David Osborne "Oz" of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department as this week’s
speaker. Captain Oz started with the Sheriff’s Department in 1982, and has
worked in many capacities during his 20 years of service. He indicated the many
reasons for wanting to enter police work, including the opportunity to help
people and the excitement and power the job provides. While these reasons are
enticement for many law enforcement officers, there are always the thoughts and
preparations for the possibility of one’s life being threatened. This is exactly
what happened to Oz in 1989.
In May of 1989, Oz was going about a routine duty of serving civil papers. After serving the papers, as he was walking back to his patrol car, the man whom he had just served shot him 5 times. The man stood over him and pulled the trigger to shoot him in the head, but was out of bullets. After a struggle, the man drove away in the patrol car, leaving Oz for dead. Eventually, a passersby saw Oz and stopped to help him. In the hospital, his family was told he would not walk again and would not be able to have children.
Thirteen years later, Oz now walks into his office at work and into his home with wife Connie and 3 children. Captain Oz credits his survival and strength for daily life to his faith in God. An important lesson learned from his ordeal is that one’s importance should not be measured by status in the community, but by "what you do with what you have, to the glory of God." When the public doesn’t remember you years later, you still leave a lasting impact on your family.
