OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

November 9, 2002

This Week’s Program... Beverly Blaney - Taylor Tours

Last Week’s Program...
Justin Majawa, from Malawi, Africa, spoke regarding the Save Orphans Ministries that he began in 1996. Growing up as an orphan himself, Mr. Majawa was compelled to begin this program. Statistics show the dire need for this ministry: There are 10 million people in the country of Malawi, with approximately 1 million orphans. Many children are orphaned due to the high death rate from AIDS and starving families.

The purpose of the Save Orphans Ministries is to empower orphans and caretakers to meet their spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and physical needs in order to live a productive life in their communities. They are currently working with 2,500 orphans to establish a family of encouragement and to support their education by paying school fees. The ministry also works in the community to raise AIDS awareness.

Even with his problems encountered while growing up, Mr. Majawa does not regret his past life, but realizes he is the product of other people’s help. He encouraged everyone to make an impact on the world. Each individual’s small gift can give the hope of the future to someone else. If you are interested in supporting this ministry, or would like additional information, contact Garry Baldwin at First Baptist Church.

Thought for the Week: "When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal."  - Napolean Hill

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
In Rotary World this month was an article related to this week’s program, that I would like to share with you. It is encouraging to see the involvement of other Rotary programs throughout the world.

South African Rotarians are finding new ways to address their country’s current nightmare – a health disaster in which 20 percent of a total population of 43 million is infected with HIV. The Rotary Club of Waterfront in Cape Town has initiated a project aimed at creating awareness and stimulating discussion about HIV / AIDS. Earlier this year, the project began with a five-day exhibition in the coastal city. Promoting HIV / AIDS prevention, the message carried by (12) 23’ tall balloons reached thousands of residents and visitors. Newspapers, radio stations, and news services spread the message to an even wider audience.

Called Umbono, which means "visual image" in South Africa’s Xhosa language, the project is aimed at coaxing the public to overcome the taboos that inhibit discussion of risky sexual behavior. Two weeks after its exhibition, the project opened a 10-day display at the University of the Western Cape, where 12,000 students viewed the balloons. The club has ambitious plans to take its message to local low-income neighborhoods, and eventually throughout Africa.

Have a great week,

Larry
