YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Exciting growth is happening in the world of Rotary. In 2001-02, Rotary grew by 4.6%. Rotary clubs added 54,939 members to their rolls this past year, bringing total membership to 1,243,431. This growth occurred in virtually every area of the world.
Along with growth of members, results of Rotary are also moving forward. Europe has become the third World Health Organization region where the transmission of the poliovirus has been interrupted. In 1994, the countries in North and South America were the first to bring polio under control. The Western Pacific region was next in 2000. Africa and ten nations on the Indian Subcontinent are the last remaining countries where the poliovirus exists.
We can also reflect on the needs of the younger members in our Rotary clubs. Are we doing everything we can to assimilate younger, newer members and make them feel welcome? We need younger members to keep Rotary strong and moving forward. They will be attracted to Rotary only if they see something that they want to be a part of – a group of men and women actively dedicated to the ideals of service.
Each of us was invited to join Rotary on the basis of our vocation. When we accepted the invitation to join Rotary, we accepted the responsibility that goes with it – to represent our vocation to the club and to the community. An invitation into Rotary also gave us the opportunity to use our vocational talents to help others. Because membership in Rotary is based on vocations, it is of the utmost importance that we practice high ethical standards in our business and professional lives. By doing so, we "Sow the Seeds of Love" with integrity and character, uplifting our vocations while serving as positive role models for young people.
Have a great week!
Larry
