OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

April 26, 2003

This Week’s Program...  Hager & Combest Scholarship Awards - Marilyn Brookman introducing.

Last Week’s Program...
Joining us this week was Dr. Rice Leach, Director of the Department for Public Health in Kentucky. He shared the background of the department and current issues being addressed. Public health service began in 1798, in an effort to compete with the British, by addressing the health needs of our merchant seamen. In 1878, the Board of Health was established in Kentucky, to combat problems associated with mosquitoes and yellow fever.

One of the current focuses of Public Health is on obesity, which contributes to many other serious health problems. Schools are beginning to institute programs to reduce the amount of grease / fat in foods and increase the quantity of exercise. Dr. Leach supports programs that encourage changes in lifestyle habits, which will reduce health expense problems by keeping people healthier, longer. A different mix of the same government monies could be used to change the focus from repairing problems to preventive maintenance.

Thanks Dr. Leach for sharing such important information with our club!

Thought for the Week: "Anger makes you smaller, while forgiveness forces you to grow beyond what you were."  - Cherie Carter-Scott, "If Love Is a Game, These Are the Rules"

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
As I talked last week about the history of the Owensboro Rotary Club, let us continue along this journey…

After its charter, the club searched for an acceptable meeting place, moving from leased rooms over Ed Southard's candy and bakery shop to the dining room at the Rudd Hotel, to the basement of the Masonic Temple, and on to the Chamber of Commerce. When the Hotel Owensboro opened, the club moved its meetings to the hotel and remained there until the early 1960's.

During its formative years, Owensboro Rotary took on its first service projects, helping underwrite the Associated Charities and helping Daviess County meet its Liberty Bond quota during World War I. In 1917, Owensboro hosted the 6th District Conference (then composed of Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee). In the 1920's and 1930's, the club became involved with the Crippled Children's Project. For many years, helping handicapped children remained a major service project for our Owensboro club.

Have a great week,

Larry
