OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

April 5, 2003

This Week’s Program...Gabrielle Gray - International Bluegrass Museum

Last Week’s Program...
Fellow Rotarian Ed Hatchett, Auditor of Public Accounts for the state of Kentucky, informed members of his office’s roles and activities in state government. The objective of the Auditor’s Office is to provide information to and protect the taxpayers and to influence the behavior of those who manage government. There are 3,000 government programs within his jurisdiction, and 135 people working in the Auditor’s Office. Since Mr. Hatchett has been in office, approximately $373 million have been "found."

There are 3 types of audits performed by the office. They are accounting audits, performance audits, and computer penetration audits. Performance audits evaluate the effectiveness, efficiency, and intentions of programs. Computer audits, or "ethical hacking into their own system," has been a new focus since 2000. Since identity theft is the fastest growing type of theft in the nation, the security of state government computers has been a priority. Mr. Hatchett emphasizes the importance of the use of password protection in both business and home computers.

Thanks Ed!

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
You are invited and encouraged to attend Rotary International District 6710 Annual Conference. This is a time of celebration, inspiration, motivation, and fellowship. The conference begins on Thursday, May 15, 2003, at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville. At 12 noon, we will begin our 48-hour celebration of all the Seeds of Love which we have sown during our last Rotary year. The conference will close with a Memorial Service on Saturday, May 17th, following lunch at noon.

This is an opportunity to share, listen, eat, fellowship, and learn about Rotary. It is a chance to renew old acquaintances and build new relationships. From other clubs, you will gain ideas for our club. From other Rotarians, you will receive energy, wisdom, and also pick up fresh new dreams and ideas of what Rotary could do.

Ben and Donna Eubank will be the representatives from Rotary International. You can register online at www.rotarydistrict6710.org.

Have a great week,

Larry

A POINT TO PONDER...
When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush.

He answered by saying that, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."

It became very quiet in the room.
