OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

August 2, 2003

This Week’s Program...Jeff Ebelhar, Owensboro Rotary Club President - Report on the Rotary International Convention

Last Week’s Program...
Bill Lee, Frontier League Commissioner of Baseball spoke to the club about the prospects of bringing professional baseball back to Owensboro. Bill indicated that the Frontier League was very interested in forming a team in the Owensboro area. He felt that the natural close town rivalry that would be created between the Evansville Otters and Owensboro would create a great fan base. He stated that his league looks for four (4) things for a team to be successful. First, the market climate must be sound with a strong public interest in baseball and with a good economic and business climate. Second, there needs to be a nice facility seating between 2,000 to 3,500 people. Third, ownership strength (owners preferable local). And fourth, the team needs to have strong management. Teams in the Frontier League have operating budgets ranging from $800,000 to $2,000,000 a year. The league was formed in 1993 and presently has 12 teams with a goal of having 16 teams within the next 3 years. The Frontier League is independent and is not associated with any major league team. Bill stated that the players in the Frontier League were comparable to players with upper class A minor league team.

Thanks for an interesting program!

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
August is membership month. We all play a role in recruiting and retaining good Rotary Club members. A normal rule of thumb is that a club can expect to lose 10% of its members each year. For the Owensboro Rotary that will mean that we will lose 20 members this year. Our Board of Directors has set a goal for our Club to recruit 24 new members this year, with a net growth of four (4). We need you to play a part in membership recruitment. The future of our Club depends on growth. Please refer to the August issue of the Rotarian magazine for a great feature article on membership basics. It will give you the talking points on why Rotary is such a great organization.

Have a great week,

Jeff
