Last Week’s Program...
Roger Newell, District
Governor, addressed Owensboro Rotary this week on the principle of changing the
world one life at a time. By upholding the timeless principles of truth,
fairness, and benefit to all involved, Rotary International gives hope to people
all over the world. This hope comes from such programs as eliminating
illiteracy, eradicating polio, and providing scholarships to students. Rotary
can set aside political, economic, and religious differences to get things
accomplished throughout the world.
Governor Newell stressed the idea that the work of Rotary is not accomplished by executives at Rotary International, but the organization’s strength comes from the local levels. The programs that come from individual Rotary clubs can have profound effects on their communities and often the rest of the world. One example is when the idea by a single Rotarian to help crippled children turned into the Easter Seals Foundation.
In closing, Governor Newell discussed the state of the polio eradication program. Eighty million dollars is needed by 2005, half of which will need to come from the United States. He challenged Owensboro Rotary members to give $100 each over the next 3 years towards this program.
Thanks to Governor Newell for speaking to our club.
