This Week's Program... Ed Hatchett, Computer Security - Auditor of Public Accounts
Last Week's Program...
This week our speaker was Brian
Crall, who is serving his 5th term as Kentucky State Representative and is a
fellow Rotarian. He highlighted aspects of the state budget, discussion of which
just ended yesterday in Frankfort. The key issue in regards to the budget was
maintaining as much as possible in the areas of education and human services.
Rep. Crall reported that Kentucky's deficit is less than surrounding states. The impact of budget cuts on education has also been less significant in Kentucky. A balanced budget was passed, with approximately 2.8% - 3.6% in cuts, much of which came from nonessential spending. Rep. Crall stated that even though this years' budget is balanced, problems would occur in future years if the national economy does not turn around. Future issues that need to be addressed by the legislature include encouraging businesses to start and stay in Kentucky, and tax reform.
Thanks Brian for speaking to the club.

YOUR
PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
A frail old man went to live with his son,
daughter-in-law, and 4 year old grandson. The family always ate together at the
table, but the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating
difficult. Peas would roll off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the
glass, milk would spill on the tablecloth. The couple became irritated with the
mess and decided they must do something. So they set a small table in the
corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed
dinner. Since he had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.
Sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone.
One evening, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. "What are you making?" The boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mommy to eat your food from when I grow up." The words struck the parents speechless. They knew what must be done. That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and led him back to the family table.
Over the years, I've learned that people may forget what you say. People may forget what you do. But people will never forget how you made them feel!
Have a great week,
Larry
