This Week’s Program... Diabetes Update

Last Week’s Program...
Prior to the program, it was announced that Owensboro Mercy Health System will be featured on MSNBC Monday, June 2, at 6:45 a.m. as a "Terry Bradshaw Pick of the Week." The club viewed a videotaped presentation that will be aired as part of the television program.

Greg Carlson, OMHS President and CEO, introduced Jerry Titel, Medical Director of Anesthesia at OMHS. Dr. Titel joined the hospital staff a year ago and heads a team providing anesthesia services for approximately 20,000 surgical procedures a year.

In his presentation, Dr. Titel provided a history of the development of anesthesia. He described the discovery of nitrous oxide in 1772, the recreational use of nitrous oxide and ether as "laughing gas" in the early 1800’s, early use of these gases by 19th century dentists to provide "painless" extractions, and finally the emergence of modern anesthesia with the introduction of halothane following World War II. Dr. Titel showed the group a state-of-the-art anesthesia machine and explained its operation and uses.

We thank Dr. Titel for an interesting and informative presentation.

Thought for the Week: "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."  - Aesop (620 BC - 560 BC), The Lion and the Mouse

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
According to Rotary history, Paul Harris was first inspired to form a club while walking with a colleague through a Chicago neighborhood that recalled the friendly small-town life of his boyhood. The idea for Rotary's four Avenues of Service also originated on a congenial hike - this time over the hills of Surrey in Southeast England in 1926.

Two British Rotarians, Sydney Pascall and Vivian Carter, developed what was called the Aims and Objects Plan, which included four "channels' for directing Rotary service: club service, vocational service, community service, and international service. The plan was accepted by the 1927 Rotary International Convention in Ostend, Belgium. The channels were later renamed avenues, and the four Avenues of Service became the roadmap for all clubs to follow in planning their service agendas. They also form the basis of the Object of Rotary.

Have a great week,

Larry
