OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

October 25, 2003

This Week’s Program... Joe Gamble, Wendell Foster Center

Last Week’s Program...
Chalmers Haas, Executive Director of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra, gave a very interesting demonstration of several percussion musical instruments. Chalmers moved here from Idaho six months ago for the opportunity to work with Nicholas Palmer (the OSO music director) and the OSO Board of Directors. He stated that both were outstanding in their abilities and their commitment to the orchestra.

He explained that only 30% of the revenues for the OSO are derived from membership or ticket sales. The rest of the budget comes from support from government grants and from gifts from the general public and other benefactors. He when on to say this is true of most Symphony Orchestras. He reported that the OSO is committed to youth music education and described how this commitment was being carried out with the OSO music in the schools program and through Youth Orchestra.

Thanks for an interesting and entertaining program!

Thought for the Week:  When you make a mistake, admit it. If you don't, you only make matters worse.  ~ Ward Cleaver

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Our Thanksgiving message this year will be one that is very close to each of us. It’s the reason you are thankful this season. We are encouraging all Owensboro Rotarians to tell us why they are thankful during this holiday. Examples could be a loved one, a marriage, a child graduating, the memory of someone dear to you, etc.

Larry Mercer will read your message at the November 26th Rotary meeting. If you are thankful for a certain person, you are encouraged to invite them to be part of our Thanksgiving celebration luncheon.

Please write your message in 500 words or less and give it to either Todd Inman or Larry Mercer or email your message to Todd at todd.inman.lvh@statefarm.com or fax it to Todd at 689-1490. The last day for submissions will be November 19th.

Why Join Rotary? Reason # 10: Assistance when Traveling: Because there are Rotary clubs everywhere, many a Rotarian in need of a doctor, lawyer, hotel, dentist, advice, etc., while traveling has found assistance through Rotary.

Have a great week,

Jeff
