Last Week’s Program...
Jeff Jones, Executive
Director at the Owensboro Area Museum of Science and History described the Roots
and Shoots program currently underway at OAMSH. Jeff first learned about Roots
and Shoots from Dr. Jane Goodall in St. Louis. Her vision is that if an idea can
take hold (take root) it can grow anywhere, just like grass can take root and
grow through a crack in a concrete sidewalk. The Roots and Shoots philosophy
covers three areas: (1) care and concern for animals, (2) care and concern for
environment and (3) care and concern for community. Roots and Shoots targets
youth with the objective of offering developmental educational opportunities.
One of Jeff’s goals is to be the first museum in the world to have a Roots and
Shoots "hands-on" experience section. Currently there is a pilot program
underway at Foust Elementary School. Principal Jeff Gray has worked to improve
the test scores of the students at Foust from an average of 38 to the upper
60’s. However, the children who attend Foust are at a disadvantage because
they do not have the life experiences of other children. Kids need experiences
to increase their IQ’s. This is where Roots and Shoots comes in. Jeff briefly
described some of the successes realized at Foust in the pilot program. He
concluded by inviting us to support or participate in this program.
Jeff thanks for an interesting program and for an interesting month of programs.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
The month of April will be a great
month for Owensboro Rotary. This month we will recognize some of the outstanding
students in Daviess County by awarding Laswell Scholarships as well as
presenting the Willis Combest and Hager Awards. Recognizing, encouraging and
rewarding young leaders is an important part of being a Rotarian. What a great
opportunity for us to get to know the future leaders of our community. Please
mark your calendar and plan to be in attendance for these meeting events.
Have a great week,
Jeff
