OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

August 7, 2004

This Week’s Program...
Jailer David Osborne - Jail Issues

Last Week’s Program...
Fellow Rotarian John Bryenton, Executive Director of Theatre Workshop of Owensboro, reviewed TWO’s accomplishments of the past year and its plans for the 2004-2005 season. He mentioned that in 2003-2004, TWO promoted its outreach programming with a brochure featuring performances offered to businesses and organizations for entertainment. One of the highlights of the year proved to be a very moving readers’ theatre performance given in conjunction with the celebration of the anniversary of D-Day. John indicated that offering programming appealing to both audiences and actors can be a challenge. The 2003-2004 season included successful productions of Our Town in the round, an original musical, a play dealing with Alzheimer’s, and a play featuring a speaking dog. “Tech week” performances were also popular. John reported that TWO devoted approximately 17% of its budget to educational programming in 2003-2004, expanding its drama clubs and reaching 5,000 students in area schools.

John outlined the 2004-2005 season which includes Lucky Stiff, a musical comedy; Proof, a drama; and Visiting Mr. Green, a comedy. TWO will also be teaming up with RiverPark Center for the first Mystery Theatre Festival in April 2005. In addition to the regular season package, the popular production of Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol returns in December.

Thanks, John, for an interesting program.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
In the annual Rotary calendar, each month is assigned a special emphasis to elevate awareness of the many excellent programs of Rotary International. August has been designated as Membership and Extension Month, a time to focus on Rotary's continuing need for growth. Proposing new members is the responsibility of all Rotarians. New members bring important benefits to a club including fresh ideas, enthusiasm, energy, long-term continuity, and diversity. Now is a good time to reach out into the community where you live and work and share Rotary with someone you’d like to see join our club. Invite that person to lunch for a first-hand look at who we are and what we’re doing in our community and throughout the world.

I mentioned last week that our membership goal for the year is 200. Membership recruitment, however, entails more than just increasing our numbers. The individuals who join Owensboro Rotary today will sustain the club in the future. Let’s make every effort to secure that future by recruiting new members who will become active, committed Rotarians.

Have a great week!

Pat

ROTARY FACTS
Did you know… that the world’s first service club was the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois? The club was formed February 23, 1905 by lawyer Paul P. Harris and three friends – a merchant, a coal dealer, and a mining engineer. The name “Rotary” was derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices. Today there are approximately 1.2 million Rotary club members working in some 30,000 Rotary clubs in more than 160 countries.
