OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

December 4, 2004

This Week’s Program...
Dr. Allyson Handley, policy advisor to Governor Fletcher and the Council on Postsecondary Education

Last Week’s Program...
Eric Davis, President of the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development Corporation, and Barry Bratcher, Senior Director of Biomanufacturing at Large Scale Biology, shared with the club information about the plant-made pharmaceutical (PMP) industry and its growth in the area. Davis began the presentation by describing the Owensboro Biotech Alliance and its efforts to promote the industry. The Alliance, formed a year ago, is comprised of the Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corporation, University of Kentucky Research and Development, Owensboro Community and Technical College, private industry and local farmers.

Barry Bratcher briefly reviewed the history of Large Scale Biology Corporation. The company was founded in 1987 in Vacaville, California. In 1996, it moved its bioprocessing operation to Owensboro and now has a staff of 80 FTE employees between the two locations. The company went public in 2000 and began making products for the FDA in 2002. Bratcher also explained the process of manufacturing proteins using tobacco plants. The plants are infected in the field with a virus containing the protein. The virus grows quickly, allowing the plants to be set, inoculated and harvested within 30 days. The harvested plants are then ground and the protein extracted and filtered. As Bratcher explained, the process basically borrows the tobacco plant’s biology to produce the protein.

Thank you, Eric and Barry, for a most interesting program. We wish you success in attracting more biotech industry to Owensboro and Daviess County.

Thought for the Week: “Joy is but the sign that creative emotion is fulfilling its purpose.” ~ Charles Du Bos, What Is Literature?

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
December is Family Month on the Rotary Calendar. It’s the perfect designation for this holiday month when families and friends gather to celebrate the joys of the Christmas season. As the month gets underway, let’s take a few moments to consider how we can celebrate and share the Family of Rotary.

Share your family - Invite a member of your family to attend a Rotary meeting with you. Share the accomplishments of family members with your fellow Rotarians.

Share your service – Invite family members to participate in Rotary projects. Talk with family and friends about the Indoor Playground and Readifest. Tell them about Rotary’s international service mission. Encourage your children and grandchildren to help someone in need this Christmas season.

Share your club – Help strengthen and sustain the Family of Rotary by proposing a new member.

In this month’s Rotarian, RI President Glenn Estess encourages us to integrate our own families into the family of Rotary and reminds us that “Rotary should be something that brings families together – not a force that pulls them apart.” This month and throughout the year, share the joy and fulfillment of “service above self” with your friends and loved ones.

Have a great week!

Pat

ROTARY FACTS
Did you know…
that within 16 years after its founding in Chicago in 1905, Rotary had become a global organization? Rotary's popularity spread quickly throughout the USA. The second Rotary club was chartered in 1908 in San Francisco, with a third club formed in Oakland, California. Others soon followed in Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York. When the National Association of Rotary Clubs held its first convention in 1910, Paul Harris was elected president. That same year, Rotary became international with the formation of the Rotary Club of Winnipeg, Canada. By the time Paul Harris ended his term as president in 1912, Rotary had spread across the Atlantic with the formation of clubs in the British Isles. By 1921, Rotary was represented on six continents. To reflect this worldwide presence, the name Rotary International was adopted in 1922.
