OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

January 3, 2004

This Week’s Program...
"Meet our members" -  Donna Risley, Hugh Gilbert, Glenn Higdon, Esther Jansing and Alma Randolph.

Last Week’s Program...
Nicholas Brake, PhD presented an informative program on workforce development in the Owensboro region. Nick is Dean of Institutional Effectiveness and Academic Programs for the Owensboro Community and Technical College. He described how the development program has three components. The first is a partnership with the local high schools which provide technical training as part of the secondary education curriculum. The second is the skill training center which provides adult education programs and continuing education and training opportunities for the area workforce. The third is the proposed Advanced Technology Center ("ATC") currently awaiting approval and funding from the Kentucky State legislature. The ATC is a unique applied technology concept which will bring the regions’ workforce to a new level. The programs included in the ATC are state of the art manufacturing and information technology training focused. Graduates from the program will be cross trained in all phases of manufacturing. Funding required for the facility which includes a major cost in equipment will be approximately $24 million.

Thanks for an interesting and informative program!

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Should old acquaintances be forgot? Not in the Owensboro Rotary! We are in for a special treat during January. Past President Marilyn Brookman has arranged a series of programs which she has entitled "Meet the Members". These will give us the chance to learn more about 23 of our fellow Rotarians. You won’t want to miss this.

Why Join Rotary? Reason 18 – Nice People: Rotarians above all are nice people – the nicest people on the face of the earth. They are important people who follow the policy of it is nice to be important but it is important to be nice.

Happy New Year!

Jeff

ANNOUNCEMENTS

• Joke of the Week: We enjoyed two jokes this week. The first joke was told by Frank Wagner and the second by Hugh Gilbert. Hugh promised to share half of his winnings with the members of the Club if he won up to $1,000,000.00. I guess we will see if bold face bribery works when the Club votes on the winning joke for the month of December. Everyone who tells a joke-of-the-week will get a chance to win up to $1,000,000.00. See Jeff Ebelhar to have your name added to the list of joke tellers.
