Last Week’s Program...
Lieutenant
Governor Steve Pence forwarded greetings from Governor Ernie Fletcher and shared
with Owensboro Rotary information regarding several issues facing the
Commonwealth of Kentucky. He first expressed concern over the state’s present
lack of a budget, remarking that it is the legislature’s constitutional duty to
deliver one. He called the fact that it has not a calamity for the state and
voiced hope that the situation will be resolved in the very near future. He also
mentioned the need for tax modernization as part of any budget package,
commenting that the state cannot continue to operate with an unpredictable
stream of revenue.
Lt. Governor Pence informed the club that the governor would be revealing a plan next month to address the state’s epidemic drug problem. The plan, which draws from the results of 14 regional drug summits recently held throughout the state, will include more emphasis on treatment.
The lieutenant governor acknowledged Owensboro as the economic engine of the western district of the state and emphasized the importance of investing in post-secondary education in this area. Kentucky must make college available to every student who wants to go. He issued the challenge that we as Kentuckians must encourage our young people to take advantage of every opportunity to pursue their education. We must encourage them not to break the law and must instill in them a sense of personal responsibility for their actions.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
At the Rotary International Convention
in May, I had the privilege and pleasure of meeting our new Rotary International
President, Glenn E. Estess, Sr. I thought you might like to know a little more
about President Estess and the focus of his presidency.
Glenn E. Estess, Sr. of Birmingham, Alabama is the Retired Chief Executive Officer of Glenn Estess Associates. Born in Pike County, Mississippi, he earned a degree in chemistry and physics from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He worked 25 years for Curtin Scientific, a scientific equipment sales company. In 1970, he started his own personnel recruiting business, which he operated until his retirement in 1993.
Glenn first joined Rotary in 1960, while living in Jacksonville, Florida. When he moved to Alabama in 1970, he joined the Shades Valley Rotary Club and remains a member of that club today. He was president of the Shades Valley club in 1975-76. During his 44 years in Rotary, he has served as district governor, director of Rotary International, vice president of Rotary International and trustee of the Rotary Foundation. He and his wife, Mary, have three children and eight grandchildren.
Glenn Estess took office as RI president on July1, 2004. During his term as president, he will emphasize literacy, health, and water management, as well as continuing to build the family of Rotary. He has challenged us to Celebrate Rotary through service, fellowship, membership growth and continued support of the Rotary Foundation.
As members of the Owensboro Rotary Club we can take up that challenge. We can be proud of who we are and what we have accomplished as a club. We can Celebrate Rotary by continuing to reach out to our community and our world through fellowship and service.
Have a great week!
