Last Week’s Program
Willis Combest & Larry Hager Awards were presented to 13 of the best and the brightest graduating students in our community.

Willis Combest was a Teacher, Coach, Humanitarian and Friend of Countless Owensboro Boys. His life exemplified the high ideals of hard work, fair play and dedication to a worthy cause. He selflessly gave of himself that others might have a better life. This award is presented annually to student athletes who exemplify the same ideals in their daily lives. The 2004 winners of this award were Julian Carter from Apollo High School, Nathaniel Waldron from Daviess County High School, Rachael Howard from Owensboro Catholic High School and Elizabeth Maze from Owensboro High School.

Larry Hager is a long time member of the Owensboro Rotary Club. His support for Education and Children in our Community is well known. He lives out the Rotary philosophy of Service above Self. This award is presented annually to students who exemplify the same philosophy. The 2004 Larry Hager award winners are Adam Pryor from Brescia University, Brooke Bankston from Kentucky Wesleyan College, Elizabeth Gibbs from Owensboro Community and Technical College, William G. Duncan from Western Kentucky University, Melissa Ficker from Apollo High School, David Burton from Daviess County High School, Drew Hines from Owensboro Catholic High School, Lauren HyLand from Owensboro High School and Michael Hagan from Trinity High School.

Each of the award recipients are outstanding representatives of their respective schools. We look for great things from these young leaders of our community. Congratulations to all the winners, their families and to the schools they represent.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS: 
Thank you to Bill Van Winkle ("Old what’s his name") and to Marilyn Brookman for Chairing the Willis Combest and Larry Hager Awards program. A number of our members commented that this was one of our best awards programs ever. This was no accident. Bill and Marilyn spent countless hours planning and coordinating this event. Be sure to thank them personally for their efforts on behalf of Owensboro Rotary.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
• Steve Gardner has challenged Club Members to each contribute $30 for themselves and $30 for their spouse or significant other to the International Rotary Surgery for Sight Program in India. For just $30 a person in India can have cataract surgery. He says he will continue to bug us until we have 100% participation. Make your check payable to the Owensboro Rotary Club Foundation, Inc.
• Membership Drive: Donna Risley and Jody Wassmer remind everyone to continue to submit names of prospective members. Those who have already submitted names should check with either Donna or Jody to follow up with formal membership proposals.
