OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

May 8, 2004

This Week’s Program...
George Scott, Internal Policy Analyst and H2A Coordinator for the Kentucky Department for Employment Service will discuss an overview of the programs and services of the Department for Employment Services.

Last Week’s Program
Patty Murphy, with MISAS (Migrant/Immigrant Shelter and Support) reported on the efforts of MISAS to help the migrant or immigrant Latino community adapt to Owensboro and Daviess County. Patty reported that it is estimated that there are 10,000 to 15,000 Latino’s in the Greater Owensboro Area. MISAS provides hospitality services to Latino’s. They serve 10 to 15 individuals a day with such things as language translation, explanation of customs, teaching and assistance with reading and writing. In addition, they provide directions of where to go for services, such as health care. They see there role as a community clearing house and representative to welcome the Latino’s to Owensboro.

Thanks for an interesting program.

- Margaret Mead (1901 - 1978)

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
I am pleased to report that your Owensboro Rotary Club, thanks to the hard work and efforts of President Elect Pat McFarling, has submitted to our Rotary District Governor Bill Miller an application for the International Presidential Citation. Due to the size of our club we are required to do more projects and activities than smaller clubs thus making it harder for our Club to qualify. To qualify we are required to be involved in four projects or activities in five different areas. The five areas of focus established by international president Jonathan Majiyagbe are: Lend a Hand to the Family of Rotary, Lend a Hand to Your Club, Lend a Hand to your Vocation, Lend a Hand to your Community and Lend a Hand to Our World. We are not sure if we meet all of the criteria, but after further analysis decided to submit the application to at least tell the story of the projects and activities of your Owensboro Rotary. Keep your finger crossed.

Thanks for “Lending a Hand” and being part of Rotary.

Have a great week,

Jeff
