Last Week’s
Program...
Anne Federlein, President of Kentucky Wesleyan College and a
fellow Owensboro Rotarian, spoke to the club regarding some of the exciting
changes taking place at KWC. Anne, who assumed the presidency in July of this
year, reported that KWC’s enrollment is up this fall. The college plans to
continue this trend, reaching an enrollment of 1,000 students in the next 3-4
years. In addition to re-establishing its partnership with the United Methodist
Church, the college is reviewing and revising its academic program offerings.
The music and theater majors are being reinstated and a minor in Christian
ministry is being considered. With a new state-of-the-art science building under
construction and slated to open Fall 2005, KWC is investigating the possibility
of offering additional programs in the health and allied health fields.
According to Dr. Federlein, one of Kentucky Wesleyan’s major strengths
is its ability to provide students a strong, career-oriented liberal arts
education. KWC teaches students to think critically and prepares them to succeed
in life, both professionally and personally. One of Wesleyan’s challenges is to
remain financially competitive. The ability to provide scholarships will be a
key factor in the school’s success. Supporting KWC’s scholarship program is one
way the community can help the college produce graduates who will in turn give
back to the community.
Thank you, Anne, for an informative and
interesting update on KWC and its future.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
November is
Rotary Foundation Month, a time for us as Rotarians to consider the many ways RI
programs and projects have brought hope to millions of people around the world.
The Rotary Foundation is our avenue of involvement in international service – a
way we can reach out at the local level and make a difference worldwide. The
mission of The Rotary Foundation is to support the efforts of Rotary
International in the fulfillment of the Object of Rotary, Rotary’s mission, and
the achievement of world understanding and peace through local, national, and
international humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs. The Foundation
is supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and others who
share its vision of a better world.
RI President Glenn Estess reminds us that through our contributions to the Foundation, we are “helping to overcome hunger, poverty, disease, and illiteracy – the basic afflictions of the human condition that are the main obstacles to world understanding and peace.” In this month’s issues of the Impetus, I’ll be sharing with you some Rotary Foundation success stories, beginning with PolioPlus. The Rotary Foundation is doing amazing things around the globe. It’s just one of the many reasons we should take pride in being Rotarians.
Have a great week!

ROTARY FOUNDATION FACTS:
POLIOPLUS
Did you know…
that by the time the world is certified
polio-free (hopefully in 2005), Rotary’s contributions to the global polio
eradication effort will reach nearly $600 million…and five million people who
would otherwise have been paralyzed will be walking! Rotarians have contributed
funds and mobilized by the hundreds of thousands to ensure that children are
immunized against the disease and that surveillance is strong, despite the poor
infrastructure, extreme poverty, and civil strife of many countries. Since the
PolioPlus program’s inception in 1985, more than two billion children have
received oral polio vaccine. Rotarian contributions support transporting vaccine
and health workers to immunization posts and initiating dynamic public education
programs to motivate parents to vaccinate their children. To date, 209
countries, territories, and areas around the world have been declared
polio-free. The number of polio endemic countries has declined to 6 and the
number of polio cases has declined by more than 99% since 1985.
