OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

October 2, 2004

This Week’s Program...
District Governor Bob Boudreau

Last Week’s Program ...
Susan Langan, regional coordinator for the Kentucky Cancer Program, provided Rotarians information about the program and its services. The KCP is affiliated with the University of Louisville and funded through the state legislature. The services it offers are free to citizens of the Commonwealth. Susan also introduced Owensboro native and former Lt. Governor Steve Henry and his wife Heather French Henry, a former Miss America. Dr. Henry, an orthopedic surgeon, was diagnosed with prostate cancer during his term as lieutenant governor. He and his wife have since channeled their energies and efforts into a statewide initiative to increase prostate cancer awareness. Their goal is to have 10,000 men tested for prostate cancer this year. Dr. Henry mentioned that prostate cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in men in Kentucky and that the state ranks 40th in the nation in screening for the disease.

Dr. Henry reviewed for the club some of the facts about prostate cancer, including that it is occurring in men at a younger age. He emphasized the importance of getting tested at age 40-45. The rate of change in the Prostate-Specific Antigen, or PSA, is now recognized as a factor in detecting the disease. If caught early, the cure rate for prostate cancer is close to 100%. Heather French Henry talked about her husband’s battle with the disease and appealed to women to encourage the men in their lives to get screened. She mentioned that today, prostate cancer awareness is where breast cancer awareness was 20 years ago. She and her husband are working to see that situation change.

Thank you, Heather and Steve, for a most informative program and for your efforts to save lives by promoting prostate cancer awareness.

Thought for the Week: "Wealth and rank are what people desire, but unless they be obtained in the right way they may not be possessed." ~ Confucius (c. 551 - 479? BC) , Chinese sage

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
"Each Rotarian is a connecting link between the idealism of Rotary and his trade or profession."  ~ Paul Harris, My Road to Rotary.

From its inception, Rotary has been concerned with vocational ideals and professional ethics. As a matter of fact, October is Vocational Service Month on the Rotary International calendar. During this time, RI suggests that clubs highlight the importance of the business and professional life of members and emphasize the Rotarian practice of high ethical standards. I thought it might be appropriate to give some thought to those standards and their place in today’s business world.

Based on the headlines, we might question whether big business even follows a code of ethics these days. Fraud, insider trading, misuse of funds.... news stories are filled with allegations that undermine the public’s trust in corporate stability and integrity. The concepts of right and wrong seem sometimes to be conditional and society’s values seem to be ever changing. What does this mean for us as Rotarians?

When we join Rotary, we do so as representatives of our particular business or profession. This gives us the dual responsibility of representing our vocation within the club and of exemplifying the ideals of Rotary within the workplace. RI President Glenn Estess suggests we can best accomplish that goal by "acting with integrity and leading by example."

"Do unto others as you would do unto yourself — the old golden rule," Estess says. "It’s not the big things. It’s the little things that we do on a regular basis that tell the story of what we’re all about."

As Rotarians, we can be agents of change. In our professions and in our day-to-day lives, let’s adhere to the principles of The Four Way Test and the Object of Rotary. We can make a difference in our community and world.

Have a great week!
