Last Week’s Program...
Richard Stallings, Executive Officer of the
Home Builders Association of Owensboro, provided Rotarians an overview of the
organization and its activities. The Home Builders Association is a local
organization representing area builders, remodelors, contractors and suppliers
to the building industry. Its purpose is to promote the efforts of the home
building industry in Daviess, McLean and Hancock counties. The Association was
formed in 1956 and currently has around 300 members. It’s affiliated with the
Home Builders Association of Kentucky and the National Association of Home
Builders. Some of the benefits of membership in the Association include
networking opportunities and participation in health and workers compensation
insurance programs.
The Association sponsors two major events each year: The Parade of Homes and the Home and Garden Show. This year’s Parade of Homes was held during the last two weekends in June and featured 25 homes. The Home and Garden Show is usually held in March. Last year’s show at the Executive Inn featured over 100 exhibitors and attracted 3,500 visitors. Stallings also explained the Association’s Registered Builders and Remodelors Program. This state-sponsored program has locally established criteria, which builders must meet and maintain for several years before being designated registered builders or remodelors. The registration process includes continuing education and an annual review. Participants in the program must provide a contract and warranty for the homes they build that includes a conciliation process.
Thank you, Richard, for an informative program.

Thought for the Week: "The love of liberty is the love of others; the love of power is the love of ourselves." ~ William Hazlitt
YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
On Tuesday, November 2nd, we each have the opportunity to
exercise one of the basic rights and responsibilities of citizenship. While
there are many ways we participate in civic affairs, the most fundamental means
of ensuring that our voice is heard is by casting our vote on Election Day. It’s
our opportunity to personally participate in democracy. From the federal to
state to local level, policy decisions are made each day that are based upon
choices made by those we voted into office. Whether it’s passage of a statewide
proposition, the election of a new city commissioner, or the election of a
president, we feel the impact in our personal lives, in our community, and in
our world.
Let’s remember that each vote counts and makes a difference. Let’s remind our friends, family, and co-workers of the need, the importance, and the power of voting. As Rotarians and responsible citizens, let’s help strengthen and build our community by making our voices heard.
Have a great week and GO VOTE!

UPDATE
As reported last week, we now have $170,000 in cash and pledges
towards our goal of $250,000. Also, we have some requests pending that I
think will
definitely add to our total. But, we do seem to be a bit stalled
at this point. With only about 50 members out of 200 having made donations,
we definitely
have the potential to meet our goal. And, I have to believe
many of you just haven’t taken the time to make your pledge. Please do so -
now. We need to
get a feel for how much the club is going to donate so we
can consider alternative plans. What might they be? One, we can designate
additional club funds
when they are available. That could mean delaying the
project. Two, we could initiate one or more fund raisers. That is actually,
to me, a great idea, but there
has been a reluctance among many to do that.
And, three, we could cut back on the quality of the project. I know we would
all rather that not happen.
Remember: The Indoor Playground will be a
visible statement of our club’s "Service Above Self." We will be able to
point to it with pride for many years.
My fellow Rotarians, LET'S MAKE THIS
HAPPEN!
