Last Week’s Program...
Dr. Jeffrey Barber, president and CEO of Owensboro Medical Health System,
brought club members up to date on several of the hospital’s current programs
and initiatives. Dr. Barber reviewed plans for the new Cancer Center, which is
currently under construction. The building will be equipped with the
state-of-the-art technology and is scheduled to open in June 2005. The Cancer
Center was recently awarded accreditation by the Commission on Cancer of the
American College of Surgeons. Dr. Barber also mentioned the progress of OMHS’s
open heart program. Through its affiliation with Jewish Hospital Heart and Lung
Institute, the heart center has recruited a top-notch medical staff and is on
track to perform 400 procedures this year.
Dr. Barber also discussed some of the hospital’s planning initiatives.
Efforts are being made to identify ways to invest resources as wisely as
possible along the entire continuum of care. Dr. Barber stressed the importance
of wellness – 50% of a person’s health is determined by his/her lifestyle
choices; 20% by heredity; 20% by the environment; and 10% by the health care
he/she receives. He identified 1) quality medical personnel, 2) quality medical
technology, and 3) access to primary health care as key factors in improving the
health of the community. The hospital is also investigating possibilities for
regionalization of services through collaborative arrangements in surrounding
counties.
We thank Dr. Barber for this informative update.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
At one of the forums I attended during the Rotary International Convention
this past May, participants discussed membership retention. I heard one longtime
Rotarian make a profound observation about why members stay in Rotary, many for
a lifetime. He said simply, "They enjoy the Rotary experience." I’ve been
thinking recently about what makes Rotary for many of us an experience, not just
an organization. I’m sure it has a lot to do with fellowship and service, but
attendance at weekly meetings is probably a factor as well. Tim Bradshaw and our
monthly program chairs are working hard to provide relevant speakers for our
meetings. Thanks to all of them for taking on a big job and for doing it well.
We’ve had some great programs so far this year!
Bottom line…. the Rotary experience is mostly what you make of it. Has it
been awhile since you attended a meeting? If so, I’d like to invite you back
again. We’ve missed you.
Hope to see you on Wednesday!
Pat

ROTARY FACTS...
Did you know…
that the first motto of Rotary International, “He Profits Most Who Serves
Best,” was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon,
in August 1911. The phrase was first stated by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon,
who made a speech in 1910 that included the remark, “He profits most who serves
his fellows best.” At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary
Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, commented that the proper way to organize a
Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted — Service, Not Self.
These two slogans, slightly modified, were formally approved to be the official
mottoes of Rotary at the 1950 convention in Detroit — “He Profits Most Who
Serves Best” and “Service Above Self.” The 1989 Council on Legislation
established “Service Above Self” as the principal motto of Rotary, since it best
explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.
