Last Week’s Program...
Owensboro Rotary was proud to
present Tom Laswell scholarships to five local high school students. The
scholarship was established in 1992 in honor of Owensboro business and civic
leader Thomas C. Laswell, Jr. An active Rotarian for 45 years, Mr. Laswell was
President of Owensboro Rotary in l955, District Governor in 1959, and a Paul
Harris Fellow. The $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually to a recipient from
each area high school.
The club was honored to have as its guest Mr.
Laswell’s wife, Evelyn. Mrs. Laswell assisted Owensboro Rotarian Tom Castlen in
presenting scholarships to the following students: Pete Jones from Owensboro
High School, Sarah Thomas from Apollo High School, Ashley Belcher from Daviess
County High School, Adam Jackson from Trinity High School, and Andrew Murphy
from Owensboro Catholic High School.
Congratulations to the recipients
and their parents! We’re proud of these students and wish them the very
best.

SPECIAL

She worked tirelessly before and during the conference and did a wonderful job
making everyone feel welcome. Assisting Donna with registration were Ed Allen,
Roger Coomes, Mike Filbin, Jim French, Darrell Higginbotham, Avery Smith, and
Martel Wightman. Tish Correa-Osborne, Bill Gabbert, Cherilyn Kizer, Pat

YOUR
PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
April is designated "Magazine Month" on the Rotary
International calendar. As members of Rotary, we receive each month a copy of
The Rotarian, RI’s official English language publication. It always contains a
wealth of information about Rotary and interesting articles on a variety of
topics. This month’s issue is no exception. Between the covers of April’s
Rotarian you’ll find an update on assistance to tsunami victims, discover facts
about cruise vacations, become informed about the future impact of AIDS, and
learn about some unusual club fund raising projects. The magazine is our window
on the worldwide work of Rotary.
The Rotarian has been published
since 1911 and today has over 500,000 subscribers. RI also publishes 31 regional
magazines in 24 languages that are distributed in 129 countries with a combined
circulation of 769,000. An interesting and informative website, www.rotary.org, is another
component of Rotary’s successful communications network. In this information
age, keeping informed about the many wonderful programs of Rotary is easy. The
information is at your fingertips...in the magazine and on the Internet. Open
the window and take in the view. You won't regret it.
Have a
great week!
Pat
A CENTENNIAL
MOMENT
Delivering Rotary’s message in print…
In January 1911,
Rotary’s first official magazine was born when the first issue of The National
Rotarian newsletter was mailed to every Rotarian. Chesley R. Perry, the first
General Secretary of The National Association of Rotary Clubs of America, edited
the 12-page publication that had an initial circulation of 3,000. Perry
accomplished the entire project for a net cost of $25.44. In addition to his
other duties as National Association secretary, he continued to serve as editor,
chief advertising salesman, and publisher of the magazine for many years.
Ninety-four years later, The Rotarian runs 68 pages, is produced by a staff of
nine editors and designers, and has a circulation of over 500,000. What hasn’t
changed is the magazine’s goal to serve as a direct communication link between
RI and individual Rotarians worldwide.
