OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

April 9, 2005

This Week’s Program…
Rotary District Conference on Friday, April 15 at the Executive Inn (Please note date and place change)

Last Week’s Program...
Brian Crall, Deputy Secretary of the Governor’s Executive Cabinet and former Owensboro Rotarian, spoke to the club regarding Governor Fletcher’s goals for his term in office. Brian mentioned that the governor’s number one commitment is improving the economy and discussed the positive ramification of the tax modernization plan recently passed by the General Assembly. The plan will enhance the state’s competitiveness and is expected to generate a minimum of 10,000 additional jobs. Brian also mentioned the governor’s commitment to extending and protecting Kentucky’s energy resources and environment. The state is on the leading edge of the clean coal technology front and is one of five states in line for a $1 billion plant. Education is another priority for Governor Fletcher. Brian commented on the need to improve student alignment, particularly in science and math, between the secondary and postsecondary levels. He also discussed measures the governor has taken to reduce waste and improve efficiency in state government by reducing the number of cabinets and significantly reducing the operations budget.

Thank you, Brian, for an interesting program.

REMINDER!!! REMINDER!!! REMINDER!!!
We meet this week on Friday, April 15, at the Executive Inn

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Twenty-five years ago this week, a remarkable new technology arrived in offices across the nation. It was so simple to use, even a CEO could master it. It was so perfectly designed, it didn’t require semi-annual upgrades. It was so versatile it actually performed better than advertised. It was the Post-it Note.

Post-it Notes may have been a God-send…literally. In the early 1970s, Art Fry was in search of a bookmark for his church hymnal that would neither fall out nor damage the hymnal. Fry noticed that a colleague at 3M, Dr. Spencer Silver, had developed an adhesive that was strong enough to stick to surfaces, but left no residue after removal and could be repositioned. Fry took some of Dr. Silver’s adhesive and applied it along the edge of a piece of paper. His church hymnal problem was solved! Fry soon realized that his "bookmark" had other potential functions when he used it to leave a note on a work file, and co-workers kept dropping by, seeking "bookmarks" for their offices. This "bookmark" was a new way to communicate and to organize. 3M Corporation crafted the name "Post-it Note" for Fry’s bookmarks and the rest is history.

Today, we see Post-it Notes peppered across files, computers, desks, and doors in offices and homes throughout the country. From a church hymnal bookmark to an office and home essential, the little yellow sticky note has colored the way we work. (Portions of this article from About.com)

Have a great week!
