Last Week’s Program...
Keith Harpole, Director of Transportation Planning for GRADD spoke to the club about a proposed roundabout in Daviess County. Mr. Harpole began his presentation by inviting everyone to attend a public meeting on August 25 at the Sorgho School regarding a proposed roundabout for the intersection of Highways 56 and 81, just west of the airport. Mr. Harpole noted this is a dangerous intersection and the proposed single lane roundabout would be a good alternative. Mr. Harpole stated that roundabouts are a good means of making intersections safer in that it forces drivers to slow down as they enter the roundabout and that if there is an accident, it is generally a small fender-bender with less personal injury. He stated roundabouts require smaller right of ways, reduce traffic congestion, reduce air quality emissions and are designed to accommodate not only automobiles but very large semi trucks. He stated this would be only the second roundabout in Kentucky, the other being in Lexington.
Mr. Harpole informed the club that the proposed renovation of Southtown Boulevard between Carter Road and Frederica, the construction of the bypass extension and a traffic study of the downtown area are all on schedule.
Thanks Mr. Harpole.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Who is Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar? Mr. Stenhammar will serve as president of Rotary International for 2005-06. Mr. Stenhammar and his wife, Monica, a retired physical therapist, reside in Goteborg, Sweden. They have two sons and three grandchildren. Mr. Stenhammar spent his career in his family’s food brokerage business. The RI president is an avid sportsman who loves sailing, biking and skiing.
President Stenhammar has chosen to emphasize literacy, clean water programs and enhancing the public image of Rotary as the major goals of his term as president. He hopes to expand Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program, boost membership by at least one net member per club, and increase the role of women and younger Rotarians in the organization. He believes that the ability to read is an indispensable element in a person’s equipment for living. I hope that in a small way our club’s weekly donations to the library will help enhance the literacy of our children.
President Stenhammar also wants to encourage local clubs to participate in clean water projects around the world. He notes, "Clean water is essential for survival, sanitation, and cooking and polluted water threatens millions of people." While in most developed nations, clean water is taken for granted, 33% of the world’s population does not have access to clean water. He challenges all local clubs to improve that statistic.
Finally, in the spirit of continuity, President Stenhammar selected Rotary’s longstanding motto "Service Above Self" as this year’s theme. President Stenhammar is a dedicated Rotarian with well thought out ideas to help make Rotary International a more effective service organization throughout the world. I hope that in our own way we can do our part to help achieve those goals.
Have a great week!
Bill
