OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

December 3, 2005

This Week’s Program… Mark David Goss, Chairman of the Kentucky Public Service Commission

Last Week’s Program...
Wednesday’s speaker was Owensboro City Manager Bob Whitmer. Bob discussed the City’s plans for the Riverfront Development Project. The Riverfront Development Project was approved by the City Commission in 2001 and will be funded by a $46 million federal grant obtained through the efforts of Senator Mitch McConnell. Plans for the riverfront include:

• Moving the boat dock from its current downtown location to English Park;
• Construction of a parking garage;
• Construction of a multi-colored, artistic riverwall. This wall will prevent future erosion of the riverbank and will extend Smothers Park by an additional 3 acres;
• Children’s playground featuring a spray park;
• Special Events Lawn for use during the various festivals;
• Memorial and Sculpture Garden near the RiverPark Center;
• An inlet design featuring a 25 foot waterfall, fountain and walkway down to the river;
• Walkway to connect English Park to the RiverPark Center and the completion of the Greenbelt to connect to English Park. The project is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2006 and hopefully be completed by 2010.

Thank you Bob for the informative presentation.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
For those of you who missed our meeting on Wednesday, November 30, you missed a special meeting. With the help of Donna Risley, our club recognized an important milestone for two of our special members: Pete Moore and Cap Gardner were both celebrating their 90th birthday that week. As Donna outlined for us, both men have distinguished themselves in their personal and professional lives. Both men have a long history of service to our club: Both are Paul Harris Fellows; Cap has been a member for 63 years and Pete has been a member for 52 years!! We sang Happy Birthday to them and had birthday cake in their honor.

In December, we celebrate the "Family of Rotary" each year. So I think it is appropriate that we kick off the month by recognizing these two gentlemen as an important part of our local Rotary family. We can also be proud of the strong family ties that run through our club. We have a number of members whose parent or grandparent were also members of our club. These personal and professional family ties help strengthen our club and contribute to the fellowship and friendship that we experience as members of our club.

Have a great week!

Bill

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO...
