OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

February 26, 2005

This Week’s Program…
Chief Williams – USCG Cutter Obion

Last Week’s Program...
Owensboro Rotary was pleased to welcome U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell as guest speaker for our centennial day celebration. Senator McConnell congratulated Rotary on 100 years of service and presented the club with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol. The senator went on to share some thoughts on the nation’s strategy in dealing with the aftermath of 9/11. President Bush’s policy has been to go on the offensive against terrorism by aggressively supporting the spread of freedom and democracy. Senator McConnell referenced the progress made in Afghanistan and the recent elections in Iraq as indicators that this approach is succeeding. He went on to mention the president’s efforts to gain European support for a more multilateral approach to dealing with the threat posed by Iran and North Korea. In closing, Senator McConnell reiterated that the brand of "gangsterism" which resulted in 9/11 can only be dealt with through the spread of democracy.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ROTARY!!! At our meeting this past Wednesday, we joined thousands of Rotary Clubs around the globe in marking Rotary’s centennial anniversary with a birthday celebration. We had a great turnout, with members of the Daviess County Rotary Club and a large number of other guests on hand to help us celebrate. A special thank you to Patty Drury and Tish Correa-Osborne for helping with the meeting preparations, and to Alma Randolph and Cap Gardner for participating in the festivities.

At the meeting, we viewed a centennial video message from Rotary International President Glenn E. Estess Sr. His remarks included the observation that few organizations remain in existence for one hundred years. According to Estess, "The fact that Rotary has reached this milestone is a sign that there is a tremendous need for all that Rotary offers." Rotary has an amazing history of meeting needs – a history that’s certainly worthy of celebration. But the best is yet to come, as clubs like ours around the world renew their commitment to service and embark on a new century of success.

Have a great week!

Pat
