OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

January 8, 2005

This Week’s Program…
Owensboro Rotary Indoor Playground Groundbreaking at the Owensboro Area Museum.

Last Week’s Program...
Judge Jeff Taylor of the Kentucky Court of Appeals addressed the Club and explained the court system in Kentucky. The District Courts handle traffic, probate and misdemeanor matters. Our current judges are Judge Lisa Jones, Judge Joe Castlen and Judge David Payne. The Circuit Court is the court of general jurisdiction. The two circuit judges are Henry "Mac" Griffin and Tom Castlen. Daviess County hopes to have a new family court in the near future. The Court of Appeals is the first intermediate court hearing appeals out of circuit court. Last year 2,680 appeals were disposed of by the Court of Appeals. The Supreme Court has discretionary review of the Court of Appeals and hears certain automatic appeals. Judge Taylor is one of 14 judges on the Court of Appeals and serves in the 2nd Appellate District. Upon his election, this office was returned to Owensboro and is located at the corner of 4th and Frederica Street.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
January is Rotary Awareness Month on the RI calendar, a perfect time to refresh your knowledge about our organization and how we’re make a difference locally and throughout the world. There are several ways to learn more about Rotary:
1. Read Rotarian magazine. It contains a message each month from our RI president and interesting articles about RI Foundation programs and club activities around the world.
2. Visit the Rotary International website (www.rotary.org), the District 6710 website (www.rotarydistrict6710.org), and our own club’s website (www.owensbororotary.org).
3. Ask fellow Rotarians who are long-time members of our club about specific aspects of their Rotary experience. Owensboro Rotary has many traditions and a rich history of service to the community.
Even if you think you know everything there is to know about Rotary, you might be surprised at what you’ll discover.

Not only do we need to learn more about Rotary, we need to make others aware of our programs and activities. Past RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe reminds us, "Time spent learning about Rotary is an investment in the future. Informed members can inspire other Rotarians with their knowledge and engage non-Rotarians by sharing what it means to be a member."

This month and throughout the year, let’s spread the word about who we are and what we’re doing to make our community and the world a better place to live.

Have a great week!

Pat

HOW "ROTARY AWARE" ARE YOU?
Did you know…
In some areas of the world, weekly Rotary club meetings begin with all members standing and reciting the Object of Rotary? The Four Avenues of Service are based on this statement, which comes from the constitution of Rotary. The Object of Rotary is "to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise." The statement then lists four areas by which this "ideal of service" is fostered: through the development of acquaintance as the opportunity for service; the promotion of high ethical standards in business and professions; through service in one’s personal, business, and community life; and the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace.
