OWENSBORO'S ROTARY IMPETUS

July 16, 2005

This Week’s Program…
Steve Winkler, Director - Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club

Last Week’s Program...
Col. Steve Parker, Deputy Director of Aviation for the Kentucky Department of Aviation spoke to the club about, you guessed it, aviation. Col. Parker began his remarks by stating that the next 10 years will be a critical time in aviation. He stated a new aircraft scheduled to be unveiled in 2006 will have a major impact. VLJs, or very light jets, are being designed and constructed at a cost of approximately $1.2 to $1.5 million compared to the $6 to $10 million price tag for one of today’s jets. This lower cost will mean that more individuals and corporations can own their own jets. It may also mean that companies will find it profitable to set up air taxi services between smaller airports and major hubs. These new planes should have an impact on Kentucky’s 61 airports, 58 of which have the smaller runways and could easily accommodate the new VLJs. Col. Parker then summarized the new airport construction occurring in Kentucky. There are two new airports currently under construction in Kentucky, one in Whitley County and one in Morehead. The Marion-Crittenden County Airport, while not a new airport, is undergoing a major renovation with complete removal of its turf runway and replacement with a new 4,000 foot hard surface runway. Construction is expected to begin in the next year for two more airports in Kentucky. One will be in neighboring Hancock County, and one in Sparta, Gallatin County. Col. Parker stated that our local airport is currently undergoing an expansion which will extend the runway to 8,000 feet making it the third longest in the state, after Louisville and Northern Kentucky. This expansion hopefully will allow us to keep our current service as well as promote the future economic development of our community. Finally, Col. Parker explained the importance of teaching mathematics, science and physics in our schools today to meet the challenges of the aviation and related industries.

Thank you Col. Parker for an interesting program.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
For the second year in a row our club was recently awarded a Presidential Citation by Glen Estes, president of Rotary International, "for demonstrating excellence and exceptional achievement to insure Rotary’s transition from one century of service to another through continued efforts in club, vocational, community, and international service." To qualify for this recognition, our club had to satisfy requirements in several categories. I want to thank Pat McFarling and last year’s Board for their hard work in helping us achieve this important recognition.

Your new Board will hold its first meeting at the Campbell Club on Thursday, July 28, 2005 at 11:30 a.m. As always, any of our members are welcome to attend our board meetings. If any of you have any comments or suggestions which you would like to discuss with our Board, please let me or any other Board member know. Your Board members for the coming year are: Bill Dexter, John Kurtz, Pat McFarling, Tish Correa-Osborne, Bob Nation, Tim Bradshaw, Patty Ray, Noel Maddox, John Kazlauskas, Sister Suzanne Sims, and John Medley.
