Last Week’s Program...
2005 Owensboro Rotary Gala:
The club held its Annual Gala and Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 30, at the Owensboro Country Club. Owensboro Rotarians and their guests enjoyed a great evening of fine food and fellowship. President
Pat McFarling provided a recap of the 2004/05 Rotary year, highlighting the club’s accomplishments and thanking members for their support. She recognized the club’s officers and board of directors, expressing appreciation for their hard work and dedication. Special recognition was given to
John Kurtz for his service as chair of the Rotary Indoor Playground Project and to
Sim Davenport for his leadership of the project’s fund raising efforts. President-Elect
Bill Dexter announced the names of three new Paul Harris Fellows. Bob Hudson,
Duval Bushong and Pat McFarling were each presented the Paul Harris medallion, lapel pin and certificate. A special award was presented to
John S. Miller in recognition of his 50 years of membership in Owensboro Rotary.
Scott Plain set the stage for the presentation by describing John’s involvement in the community, his profession and Rotary. Following the awards ceremony, Pat McFarling passed the gavel to incoming president Bill Dexter.
Special thanks go to Gala Chair Lyle Scifres for once again putting together an outstanding event.

YOUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS:
Where did the year go? I’ve heard it said that the last of something is usually a challenge. As I sit down to write this last column, I’m certainly finding that to be the case. How do you adequately thank a group of 200 people in the space of a paragraph or two? We have a terrific club made up of talented, hardworking, dedicated members and I want to express appreciation to each of you for helping make this year a success. Our officers and directors have done a masterful job of guiding the club. I’m extremely grateful for their willingness to give of their time, energy and insight. Our committee chairs and project coordinators have, without exception, accomplished all the important tasks that keep Owensboro Rotary going and enable us to have a positive impact in the community. My thanks to all of you for your many and varied contributions.
When I accepted the president’s gavel a year ago, I told you it was an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to serve as your president. Now as I pass the gavel on, I can tell you it has not only been an honor and privilege, but also a pleasure. I’ve learned so much about Rotary as an international organization and about our club in particular. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and work with people whose dedication and commitment to service are truly inspirational. The fact that we joined clubs worldwide in celebrating Rotary’s centennial year added a special dimension to my presidency. The entire experience has been tremendously rewarding and I have wonderful memories that I will cherish forever.
I wish Bill Dexter the very best as he begins his term of office. The 2005/06 year marks our club’s 90th anniversary. Owensboro Rotary has a long and proud tradition of service to the community. Let’s lend our support to Bill and work together to continue and extend that tradition.
Thank you again for a great year!
Pat
